if you have VIN, it is easy to figure out when was the car built.

In any case, if you are leasing, this is a bad deal and simply move on to new model.

Dealer has been hounding me to come in today for the "new" 2014 IS250, as it's the last day of the month/quarter.

Said ......"It was shipped to our dealership in October of 2013. "

And there you have it....the IS that he is talking about has been sitting, test drived, touched, sat in by all kinds of people for over 18 months. STAY AWAY!

almost 2 years on the lot. That would require a 30% discount.

I wouldn't be too worried about that. Test drives are hardly ever abusive. You make it sound like the car has cooties.

The biggest concern is depreciation, and whether the car has a material defect

I once bought an Isuzu Rodeo as brand new with factory warranty and extended warranty thrown in that was a full 2 model years old. The initial discount made up for the depreciation, warranty wasn't an issue and I drove the shat out of it until I basically traded it in for taxes on a bimmer. I also used it for work, so wrote it off on my taxes as a self employed individual. There are scenario where this kind of purchase makes sense.

Who woulda thought a brand new, non-loaner, 2014 IS250 AWD would still be on a dealer's lot... I told him I'd think about it, but as soon as I drive it off the lot, the car will tank another $4k-$5k in value, especially as the 2016 are due in a few months.

I'm thinking about negotiating the price down another few grand and then asking to lease it...but if I do a lease, will the lease be based on the ORIGINAL MSRP or my negotiated value and then the residual figured from that?? anyone experienced with leasing a new car that is almost 2 years old??
I had an '07, and bought it new, and that price was $5,000 off MSRP; so $6,000 off a car that is no less than 1 year old is not a good deal at all.

It still comes with a factory warranty; the likelihood that a dealer's car was abused, and then sold as new is slim to none.

I think you miss the point. A car that is supposed to be a luxury car deserves better.

deserves better?

there's always some cars that sit on the lot for various reasons... if roughyear can get a smoking great deal on it, then i say go for it.

It deserves better than to be driven? Sweetheart, this is a Lexus, it's a regular car. This isn't some $200,000+ limited production car that is garaged and driven every once in a while because even farting in the seat would depreciate it.

Deserves better than what? For some reason, it hasn't sold, and now someone has the chance to get a great deal on it, and snap up a Lexus for the price of a Camry.

Have them throw in an extended warranty. The 8yr/100k type. Then it's a deal!

So.... I went to the dealer yesterday to take a look at this "2014" IS250, after being pestered by the internet manager to come in and "make a deal".. fine, I had some time after work.. drove the 30miles to get there. I go into the New Car section, as they have another building right next door for the Pre-owned Lexus......... I asked to see the person I've been chatting with via email.. "oh, she's in the pre-owned department manager".. okkkkkk. I see the IS250 on the show room and notice that it's the RWD.. I ask the sales guy I thought this was supposed to be AWD.. "nope that's the only one we have".. I look at the manufacture date.. it says April 2014... I tell the sales guy, the car I'm looking for is supposed to be AWD with a manufacture date Oct 2013. He scratches his head and says that he'll call over the internet manager I was chatting with.. she comes over and says "yup that's the car".. I said, "you said it was AWD".. she says "I thought it was".. .WTF??!!! I said "you said it was manufactured in Oct 2013 and this is April 2014".. she says "I thought it was"... she pauses, says to go with her next door and she'll check her email... "yup, that's what I said, don't know how I got it twisted around, BUT.. I do have a 2012 AWD in the same configuration that I can sell you" .... ARRRGGGG.. no thanks.... I leave and go back up to the sales guy with the 2014 and ask him WTF was her problem... he goes, "I've been here 14 years, she's been here 4 months, that's what's wrong with her"... nuff said.. I left.

The lesson in this is always have them email you detailed pix of the car before you drive out to see it. You would have seen it was RWD and not as advertised, and then you could have pressed her before she wasted your time.

haha.

well that's the end of this story.

RWD.... which makes the offered price even worse

You wasted 2 gallons of gas and a lot of time.

onto the next one...
