Speed Kills
Tough lessons and life unfortunately teaches those quite harshly. Lots of responsibility in cars, alcohol and other devices that can lead to grave results. I see this daily in some form or another daily and there are many combinations that have grave results for those with careless attitudes.
I've lost more than I care to recall over the years due to the negligence of others who impacted their lives or taken it away.

Actually one of the big things to slow me down was a mythbusters episode where they busted the head on collision myth. As part of the demonstration they drove a car into a wall at 100. It was clearly evident had there been a driver in the car, it would have been a fatal accident despite all the technology the manufacturers put into creating a crash resistant passenger compartment. It made me think about all the times I've gone (well over) 100 mph. When I rode bikes, it was too easy to do, in cars it's not hard, but there's a whole lot more waiting. Neither type of machine slows quickly from triple digit speeds without hitting something hard, and seeing how low the probability of surviving a 100 mph car crash into a solid object is, it made me think a whole lot harder about going that fast.
FWIW, I hit the ground at over 100 mph racing motorcycles 6 different times. Still have all ten fingers and toes...I've had a charmed life.

No, actually I was wearing a Snell approved helmet, Dainese leathers, boots, and gloves, and I had the wherewithall to know when to flip to the other side when the downside got too hot.
OK...understood. But the crux of my point was that that you at least had something decent on for protection, and weren't riding around in shirt-sleeves or with a little Beany-cap that might satisfy the letter of the law, but not the spirit...or common sense. I've even seen guys, in the summer, riding with a helmet and nothing else on but jean-shorts and shoes...bare back/chest and legs. And we wonder why so many people get hurt or killed on bikes.
I couldn't care less about what the law requires for safety gear. I figure if you can look at the evidence and decide none of that stuff is valuable, then you probably don't need it anyway, and I have no right to tell you to wear it.
Just a small shot of chlorine for the gene pool.
