My CLS has an SD slot that goes in the headunit, I think I may start playing around with that...

Way more than would be on a CD. A lossless track is maybe 50MB. How big is your USB stick? You can buy a 128GB stick for $40. That will hold 2,560 LOSSLESS WAV files. How many songs do you have?

That 2,560 songs would equal 182 CDs at 14 tracks a CD. Do you carry and select between 182 CDs in your car all the time?

AND a USB port can also be used for an iPhone, iPod, whatever so it has utility other than just a CD player.

^Good to know that some units are already supporting lossless WAV files, although it'd be nice if they'd start supporting lossless compression formats that generally help cut the file sizes in half. Most of my music collection is in Monkey Audio or lossless WMA these days.

I don't know about the Lexus, does it play WAV files? I'm out of town in the Jeep right now. It will try it when I get home. They play great off that USB stick in the Jeep.

They should keep CD players because most cars (at least in "our" market of cars) play DVDs as well.

I think CD players will go away but not until there is an efficient way to get high quality CD and 5.1 DVD-A recordings digitally to satisfy consumers like myself

Pretty efficient. Rip CD in WAV lossless. Drag to USB stick. Play.
