Very interesting in that everyone has a different opinion on luxury levels. As for hlee12 he seems far off.
In my opinion as far as U.S. and worldwide:
Tier 1: Audi, BMW, Lexus & Mercedes... Jaguar & LandRover can be included but more niche than mainstream.
Tier 2: Acura, Cadillac, Infiniti & Lincoln
Tier 3: Buick, Chrysler & Volvo (Mercury at one time)
Ultra Luxury: Bentley & Rolls Royce
Exotic Sports Car: Bugatti, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mclaren, etc.

sales figure have nothing to do with this. Walmart sells so much more than Target. i lived in europe. Lexus is lower than many of the brands that i'm not even gonna name.

and Lexus still grew faster than them YoY... but cant overtake until RC and NX come, MB and BMW have way too many models right now. Even then, Lexus wont much all those models, especially lower end ones that have volume and they probably wont try either.
when people think of 'safety' i'm sure people will still think of Volvo. when people think about the rich, i'm certain MB is #1 at the top. performance would be bmw. audi is design/impeccable build quality. lexus would be reliability/quality.
but in a luxury tier, can you guys honestly put MB and lexus together? i can see how people tier up lexus/bmw/audi. i can see that. i don't agree with it, but i understand it. but MB? how so? i really don't know anybody who thinks lexus is MB's equal. i really don't.

growth has nothing to do with the perception of people. people will always buy lexus because of the reliability factor.
Right now, BMW and Mercedes are offering rebates of $5-7k on 3 Series, C Class, 5 Series, E class and ML. Audi is $2-4k and Lexus is $2-3k.
I also recently learned of some shady things that Mercedes and BMW are doing to inflate their sales numbers, but won't go into that hear. From what I understand, both manufacturers are in a "do whatever it takes" phase to reach #1. Whatever works, I guess.

I don't really see that changing much until next year when NX and RC production are ramped up. Otherwise, there's no real additional volume that's going to boost Lexus closer.
