Does Dealer have to check credit if you pay by check?

If it was for honest reasons, probably trying to find which banks would give the best rate.
But our dialogues that evening were less than polite, so i wouldn't be surprised if they ran it a bunch to knock down my score. I didn't even realize they did it until a week or two later when i started getting loan rejections in the mail.

Running your credit for the same purpose multiple times within 45 days doesn't run down your score. Multiple auto or mortgage pulls only count as one.
Mine winds up being run 2 or 3 times when I buy, once by the dealer, one by the lender, another time usually a. Few days later.

Lexus of Glendale ran my credit, even though i was going with my credit union. But i was using a personal check for the down payment. I argued with them a bit, but they pushed to do so.

That was to cover their a$$. If you can't come up with your own financing for some reason, the contract you signed with the dealer financing would go into effect.

As a follow-up to my prior post, I just got home to find another denied loan letter.
It was the dealership again that ran it, but this time they ran it TWO WEEKS after i bought the car. My score has gone from 749 to 695.

Even within 2 weeks it should not matter.
You should call the credit bureaus and make sure that all those inquiries are marked as auto loan applications. Like I said, they should all count as one within 45 days.
