Period Review of the Fourth-Gen 1993 Toyota Supra Turbo
MotorWeek is “television's longest running and most respected automotive series,” so it was around to test the fourth-gen Toyota Supra when it was new. If you’re not familiar with the things that made it so great, do check out the video posted here.
It rides on a chassis borrowed from the Lexus SC, although as opposed to most versions of its older versions, it was engineered and marketed as a full-on sports car. In twin-turbo guise, the Japanese version had 276 hp, but that was raised to 320 by the time it hit American shores.
It was that moment (North American introduction) that really made its popularity soar. People discovered that its Lexus-derived three-liter straight-six could be tuned to crazy heights.
There were also its looks to shout about – even now, some more than 20 years after it was launched, it still looks quite sexy…

i imagine this statement is because of its reputation for reliability (or lack thereof) and difficulty to maintain? a reputation shared by the its tt rx-7 and 300zx cousins. what about the (if left stock, if there was such a thing) supra turbo? did it have its share of issues that in hindsight we are glossing over?

Plus the Supra, believe it or not, was the simplest of all those cars. No self destructing engine like the RX7, no AWD and adjustable shocks like the Mitsu, no rear wheel steering like the 300ZX, everything was pretty simple(realtively) in a Supra, plus everything mechanical on the twin turbo models was WAY overbuilt, so you can easily turn up the boost without too much fear of the block holding together or the transmission taking a dump.
