Toyota discontinuing FJ Cruiser after 2014 model year

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is not long for this world. According to the manufacturer's own fleet website, the rugged FJ will be discontinued after the 2014 model year, with the companies final orders due in June of next year.

Toyota first launched the FJ Cruiser in 2006 as a 2007 model, and aside from minor year-over-year changes, it has not been substantially updated. The FJ is the modern successor to the original FJ40 Land Cruiser that Toyota produced from the 1960s all the way up through 1984, when the automaker decided to better focus on its larger, four-door Land Cruiser line. Currently, it uses a 4.0-liter V6 engine with either rear- or four-wheel drive, and is available with either a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. Interestingly, word of the FJ's demise comes not long after Toyota's US boss, Bill Fay, reaffirmed his company's commitment to body-on-frame trucks in late July.

Also of interest, Toyota's fleet website states that the 2014 model year Prius range will have "minor updates," though it's unclear what those are as of this writing. When Autoblog reached out to confirm these developments with Toyota, spokesman Curt McCallister reminded us, "As is our corporate policy, we don't discuss future products beyond the present or upcoming model year."

This is a shame, I wish they would've made a full 4 door version. Wrangler more than doubled sales when they introduced a 4 door.

And this would look much more stylish than the 4Runner, in my opinion.

A competent vehicle, but I never warmed up to it. Boring and plastic(y) interior, an old powertrain, and ghastly visibility and blind-spots. so long

Thats sad. Growing up in LA I saw many of the older ones that were totally restored and the modified with big wheels and tires and tons of off road goodies. I never knew why this thing never sold better. I would rather this thing than a Nissan Pathfinder

Those things have to have the worst outward visibility and blind spots of any vehicle I've driven. Even a Ford panel van. At least in that rig you had great forward visibility. Its enough to where you couldn't give me an FJ.

Don't know how its supposed to be great off-road if you can't see out of it or have a feel for where the corners are on the truck.

I think of more the Xterra than now soft Pathfinder.

This is IMO how I break it down

Juke, Rogue VS Rav4
Pathfinder, Murano VS Highlander, Venza
Xterra VS 4Runner, FJ Cruiser
Armada VS Sequoia, Land Cruiser

Agreed, so much potential. Wish Toyota made an effort with this fun niche.

Lol, no wonder they're launching this car in the Philippine market.

Everything that looks like metal is plastic on the FJ Cruiser. It exudes cheapness when seen in person.

Agree, the interior is awful, lots of blind spots, and no simple features they could throw in such as projector lights, etc.

Good riddance. It was the most hideous POS on wheels.

I love the exterior look but it has so many negatives.

The FJ was a gorgeous car. I always loved the look of the FJ but not enough to buy one myself. The gas mileage kept me away. No second generation FJ?
