Then if 10,000+ were so important, a proper HD from the Big 3 would do.

The big 3 sell 2 million trucks a year, you would think they would know if an in between truck is in demand.

Nissan is no doubt looking for a niche vs. going head to head with the big guys.

What niche? The payload and tow capacity are not niche. 1400lbs is just 400 lbs more than a Tundra Platinum and 1600 lbs less than the most capable F150.

I'm sure Nissan has people who are more knowledgeable than us, and with more information who would know their rationale for the truck.

You need to stop magazine/paper racing vehicles. Yes, rated capabilities are one thing, but the way the vehicle handles anything within its capabilities can be quite another. I will give the benefit of the doubt that the Titan XD with its massively torquey Cummins V8 will handle any tow load better than the Gas 1/2 tons that are out there today. Yes, it even may come up short in paper specs than some of the existing 1/2 tons, but I imagine the overall stability, efficiency under a full load, etc, would be better with the Titan XD than the existing 1/2 tons. All while still maintaining some of the day to day driving characteristics of the 1/2 tons and not the bulky HDs. THIS IS THE NICHE. Even a 1% niche of the overall pickup market is significant sales potential.

And this also adheres to the philosophy that the Japanese trucks need to be overbuilt to be seen as even possibly comparable to the Domestics.

Nissan likely didn't have the resources to do the 1/2 ton and the full HD, and so this was likely an incremental development cost, but any sales and awareness they gain from it and the Cummins engine are just icing on the cake of being relevant in the pickup market after ~12 years of the first Titan.

I don't get why you're so negative on the potential for this truck. Did Nissan run over your dog?

Default The 2016 Nissan Titan will also have a 5.6L gasoline V8

New Tennessee-sourced 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 Gasoline Engine to Power Nissan TITAN and TITAN XD

- Advanced Endurance® V8 produces 390 horsepower, 401 lb-ft of torque; will be available in both TITAN and TITAN XD

- Joins award-winning Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel to round out "every duty" TITAN XD engine lineup

- V8 gasoline-powered TITAN XD Crew Cab goes on sale in early spring 2016, following this month's arrival of TITAN XD diesel models

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan announced today that a new 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 gasoline engine, assembled in Decherd, Tennessee, will be available in the all-new TITAN and TITAN XD full-size pickup trucks, completing the first phase of the "American TITAN" story. The engine features four-valves per cylinder, Variable Valve Event & Lift and Direct Injection, and is rated at 390 horsepower @ 5,800 rpm and 401 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm.

The gasoline-powered engine joins the award-winning Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel in early spring 2016 to round out the engine offerings for the all-new Nissan XD full-size pickup, which stakes out a unique position in the segment between traditional heavy-duty and light-duty entries. The bold new design combines the capabilities of a heavy-duty hauler with the drivability and affordability of a light-duty pickup.

"With this new engine, Nissan TITAN XD customers will have the opportunity to make the choice that is best for their towing and hauling needs – either the all-new Endurance V8 or the Cummins® diesel – two offerings that you won't find on any other truck on the market today," said Rich Miller, chief product specialist, TITAN, Nissan North America, Inc. "It's going to be a tough decision for TITAN XD customers between these two very durable, capable engines."

While the new Endurance V8 shares its displacement with the previous-generation V8 installed in Titan, that is where the similarities end. The new engine features 390 horsepower (up from 317) and 401 lb-ft of torque (up from 385), along with Nissan's advanced VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) technology, which combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake and exhaust sides to provide high performance and crisp response. Throttle response is enhanced by directly controlling the intake valve, rather than using the traditional method of controlling intake with a throttle valve, and valve timing and opening with non-variable camshafts.

The new engine also features Direct Injection Gas (DIG™) technology, which provides better wide-open throttle performance and improved fuel economy and emissions performance (versus a non-direct-injection system) by reducing engine knock, improving combustion stability and offering precise injection control. An 11.2:1 compression ratio is provided by a new piston design, aiding overall engine efficiency and performance (previous Titan: 9.8:1) and a Multi Control Valve (MCV) assists in managing the engine's thermal efficiency better than a traditional thermostat.

TITAN XD models equipped with the Endurance V8 engine will be outfitted with a new 7-speed automatic, which features Adaptive Shift Control and Downshift Rev Matching.

More information on the Endurance V8 and 7-speed automatic will be available closer to its early spring 2016 on-sale date.

About TITAN XD

The all-new 2016 Nissan TITAN XD full-size pickup has been named one of three finalists for the 2016 North American Truck/Utility of the Year (NATOY) and was also recently named "Truck of Texas" by the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in their annual 2015 Texas Truck Rodeo, which puts the industry's best trucks, SUVs and CUVs through a grueling two-day evaluation at the historic Knibbe Ranch in Spring Branch, Texas. In addition to the competition's top award, Truck of Texas, the new TITAN XD won three other honors – Luxury Pickup Truck of Texas, Off-Road Pickup Truck of Texas and Best Powertrain for its available Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel engine.

The TITAN XD's long list of innovative available technologies include an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, Trailer Sway Control (TSC), Tow/Haul Mode with Downhill Speed Control and a Trailer Light Check system that allows one-person hook-up operation – including checking turn signals, brake lights and running/clearance lights. Assisting trailer hook-ups is a RearView Monitor with Trailer Guides. TITAN XD also offers an available Around View® Monitor (AVM), which provides a unique "bird's eye" view of the surrounding area to help with parking and pulling in and out of tight spaces. The system includes Moving Object Detection (MOD). Two trailer hitches are available, including an integrated gooseneck hitch engineered into the frame and easily accessible in the bed.

The TITAN XD is offered in five grade levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum Reserve and the sporty PRO-4X grade with standard off-road features such as 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with all-terrain off-road tires, Bilstein off-road shock absorbers, electronic locking rear differential and skid plates. The TITAN XD Platinum Reserve grade features premium leather-appointed heated seating, dark chrome exterior trim, two-tone paint treatment, leather-wrapped steering wheel with wood insert, 20-inch dark chrome aluminum-alloy wheels and much more.

Following the launch of the 2016 TITAN XD Crew Cab in December, the new TITAN will be offered in three cab configurations, two frame sizes, three powertrain offerings and five grade levels. More information on the full lineup will be available at a later date.

Default Nissan Prices Gasoline-Powered 2017 Titan Crew Cab From $34,780

Looking at buying a new full-size truck? The new Nissan Titan presents a compelling option – especially in XD spec with the Cummins turbodiesel. But if you don't need something that heavy-duty, the manufacturer has now released pricing for both the standard and XD models with the 5.6-liter Endurance V8 as well.

The base 2017 Nissan Titan Crew Cab S 4x2 starts out $34,780. But as with any pickup, there are numerous configurations available, and pricing only goes up from there.

Step up to SV trim and you're looking at an MSRP of $37,670, SL starts at $46,380, and top-spec Platinum Reserve goes for a princely $52,310. Go for four-wheel drive and prices go up by a few grand to between $37,810 (in S trim) and $55,400 for the top-of-the-line Titan Platinum Reserve Crew Cab 4x4. The 4x4 model also gets a mid-level PRO-4X trim for $45,020.

The heavier-duty Titan XD will also be available with the gasoline engine, with prices starting a good $1,500 higher than the regular-duty version. Trim levels run the same as the lighter model and range from $36,290 all the way up to $56,910.

Pricing for the single-cab versions will follow in due course, as they will for the Cummins diesel-powered models. But don't expect to be able to get the diesel in the standard Titan, because that remains confined to the Titan XD.

While it was at it, Nissan also announced a new warranty program for the Titan. Covering five years and 100,000 miles, it's billed as “America's best truck warranty,” besting the competition by two years and 64,000 miles.

The new Titan looks like a massive improvement over the ancient outgoing model. The warranty is also very favorable. Unfortunately for the Titan it still has to go up against the F-Series, Silverado/Sierra twins, and the Rams, all of which are the best they've ever been too.

Default Nissan Rolls Out Baby 2017 Titan XD Pickup

Nissan has introduced the 'standard' version of the Titan pickup truck at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show.

The new Titan variant acts as the baby brother of the Titxan XD and while it bares visual similarities to the larger model, it is actually underpinned by an entirely separate chassis that's 14.7 inches shorter than the XD's. Despite the reduced length, the Titan half-ton remains 79.5 inches wide and has the same sized cab as the XD.

Customers of the entry-level model will be able to choose between 4x2 and 4x4 drive configurations, three bed lengths (5.5, 6.5 and 8 foot) and three different cabin configurations (Crew Cab, King Cab and Single Cab). Furthermore, the same S, SV, Pro-4X, SL and Platinum Reserve trim levels of the XD are also available on the baby pickup.

Power for the new car comes courtesy of a 5.6-liter V8 petrol engine with 390 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque on tap. As standard, this engine is coupled to a 7-speed automatic transmission and once the model hits the market, a smaller V6 will also be offered.

Sales of the 2017 Nissan Titan will commence in summer 2016.

Default Nissan Reveals Petrol-Powered Titan XD With 390HP; Launches Shorter Half-Ton Model

After revealing the updated GT-R, Nissan pulled the wraps off the V8 gasoline version of the Titan XD pickup truck, along with the shorter half-ton version.

Under the hood there is now a 5.6-litre V8 gasoline engine kicking out 390hp and 401 lb-ft of torque paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Nissan expands the lineup of their full-sized pickup truck to include two chassis sizes, diesel and petrol engines, a range of cab and bed sizes as well as 4x4 and 4x2 configurations.

The new half-ton model will be initially available in a Crew Cab version, with single and King Cab ones to follow later in the year. Measuring 228.1 inches long, the Titan is 14.7 inches shorter than the larger XD model, having also a foot shorter wheelbase.

"The 2017 TITAN half-ton has the same aggressive style of the TITAN XD, but is about a foot shorter in wheelbase," said Fred Diaz, division vice president and general manager of Trucks and Light Commercial Vehicles in Nissan North America. "They share the same cabs, but while it offers similar ruggedness and durability, the TITAN half-ton's chassis is completely different than XD."

The new updated V8 shares only its displacement with the old unit as Nissan has added their advanced VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) technology and direct injection for better performance and fuel economy. The compression rate is now 11.2:1 thanks to a new piston design (previous model: 9.8:1) and a Multi Control Valve replaces the traditional thermostat, helping with the management of the thermal efficiency of the new engine.

The results are 390hp/5.800rpm (up from 317hp) and 401lb.ft/4.000rpm (up from 385lb.ft). Nissan also said that they will launch a smaller V6 gasoline engine at the near future.

"The TITAN XD stakes out a unique position in the full-size truck segment between traditional heavy-duty and light-duty entries," said Diaz. "Now, with the addition of the powerful Endurance V8 gasoline engine, TITAN XD buyers can experience the TITAN XD two ways."

Nissan has also announced the pricing for the petrol-powered Titan XD Crew Cab, starting out at $35,290 for the S Crew Cab 4x2 model and all the way up to $55,520 for the Platinum Reserve Crew Cab 4x4 version.

I don't know why Nissan still bothers to keep this truck in the American market (and its large size, of course, prevents it from being sold in a number of other places). According to the figures I've seen, they have only moved a little over 4000 units so far this year (someone, of course, is free to correct that figure if I'm wrong). That can't even hold a candle to the Toyota Tundra, much less the mega-selling Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado. Yes, Nissan probably does make a good profit on each one sold (which is the case with most large pickups and SUVs)....but you still have to sell in volume to justify the costs of production. From what I can see, the volume just isn't there. The American full-size pick-up market is arguably the most intensely loyal one in the auto industry...particularly for the domestic-badged trucks. It is extremely difficult for newcomers to break in....even after 20 years, Toyota, with the T-100/150 series and the Tundra, still has only a limited amount of success....the Titan, not even that. In addition, the Titan, like the Armada and QX-56, has a history of quality-control problems from the Canton, MS plant where they are built.

Default Nissan's 2017 Titan Line-up Welcomes 'Texas' Styling Package

At the State Fair of Texas, Nissan has introduced an optional package for the 2017 Titan line-up in honor of the lone star state.

Appropriately dubbed the 'Texas' Titan package, it is available for both regular Titan and Titan XD Crew Cab models in 4x4 and 4x2 drive configurations and consists of a selection of special interior and exterior elements.

From the outside, the Texas package can be identified with the chrome inner and outer grille finish, metallic-finish kick plates, Texas Titan badging, chrome exhaust tips and 20-inch chrome aluminum wheels. Inside, those that equip the package receive distinctive floor mats.

Although Nissan hasn't announced pricing details for the package, the launch of the package comes as part of the marque's 'Year of the Truck' celebrations.

The run-of-the-mill Titan half-ton is offered exclusively with Nissan's 5.6-liter V8 delivering 390 hp and 394 lb-ft of torque. The Titan XD Crew Cab variant meanwhile is available with this engine as well as the Cummins 5.0-liter V8 turbo-diesel, rated at 310 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque. All diesel models come outfitted with a 6-speed automatic transmission whereas the petrol V8 models send power through a 7-speed 'box.
