Default Your list: The 5 BEST and 5 WORST Toyota products in history

Could the Prius and LFA be in the same list?
Perhaps a certain generation of Camry or Corolla be in your Top 5?
Are you even aware of products not sold in the US, such as the Crown or Avensis? Old products such as the 2000GT or Toyoda AA?

Then we have products like the ES250 and Tercel on the other end of the spectrum.

Toyota has its hits and misses. Which ones are your favorites, and favorite to hate?

How knowledgeable are you regarding Toyota's 76-year history?

DISCUSS.

Not including Lexus/Scion (which, though Toyota, are separate divisions), here are my rankings:

BEST:

3Gen 1992-1996 Camry. Did almost everything extremely well as long as you weren't a boy-racer.

1994-1999 Celica. Though the American-market engines were a little underpowered, its looks, IMO, were nothing short of dynamite. (I owned one for 6 years, BTW)

1Gen (1994-1999) American-market Avalon. The perfect Japanese Buick....without the added Lexus price.

The 2Gen MR2 Turbo. Classy, well-built, with Ferrari-looks (especially in red), and fun to drive, though the engine often ran hot, it wandered somewhat on long straight roads, and was hard for tall people to get in and out of.

The 1Gen Venza. Finally, a credible Toyota alternative to the popular Subaru Outback, though both four and V6 versions are saddled with too-large wheels and a too-firm ride for a vehicles in this class.

(I didn't list the new FT-86 sport-coupe because it was jointly-developed with a Subaru drivetrain and is not sold in America as a Toyota...only under Scion/Subaru nameplates)

WORST

1Gen T-100/T-150 trucks. Introduced as a "full-size" American-truck competitor, but, in fact, was a mid-sizer with 4 and V6 engines. A complete fail.

1Gen Tundra. Included a V8 engine, but was STILL, in fact, a 3/4 size masquerading as a full-sizer. Almost as much of a fail as the original T-series.

2Gen Tundra. Finally had both the engines and the size it needed to compete with American trucks, but saddled with poor engineering, flimsy parts, and an insultingly cheap interior. Yet another truck-fail.

1Gen Echo. After years of the excellent Tercel subcompact, the Echo's frumpy, awkward looks, cheap center-stack instrumentation, and Nerdish personality seemed like something out of a science-fiction movie.

The 2000-2005 Celica. A huge letdown, IMO, after the beautiful 1994-1999 Celica models. It had the turbo the previous-generation lacked, but was too small, looked like something off a Hot Wheels toy-store shelf, was difficult to get in/out of, had an overstyled/overly-plastic interior, and was noisy, crude, and unrefined.

Lexus BEST (in order)
1. 89-94 LS
2. 95-00 LS
3. 92-96 ES
4. 93-99 SC
5. 07+ LS

Lexus WORST- only two were "bad"
1. 10+ HS
2. 89-91 ES 250

Toyota BEST (in order)
1. 92-96 Camry
2. 90-93 Celica
3. 93-97 Corolla
4. 91-98 MR2
5. 93-98 Supra

Toyota WORST (only two "bad" products IMO, in order)
1. 84-90 Van
2. 00-06 Echo

In short, the early 90s had Toyota Motor Corp put their best products out, and arguably the best products in the world in that era. The 89 LS took on the luxury car market by storm undercutting the competition by thousands all the while with unprecedented levels of quality, refinement and sophistication. To this day, it stands as the vehicle that has made the greatest impact to the levels of quality in the automotive world, IMO. The 92 Camry had a similar impact (though not as earth shattering as the LS) with its Lexus-like build quality, NVH, and ride quality. In fact, they made it too good such that generations after that till this day have been built with cheaper materials, in particular on the interior. Thankfully, reliability was never compromised despite the de-contenting which applied to all new Toyota generations of the late 90s and into this day with a lesser degree of de-contenting to Lexus products as well.

Overall top vehicle ever built by Toyota and arguably the best in the world for its time, you guessed it, the 1989 Lexus LS.

(NOTE, I'm leaving the LFA out as it's a non-mass-market vehicle though this can likely be the best Toyota product ever built for its time...)

Glad there is another person on here views the tundra first gen as a best Toyota. I think 00-06 are all worth mention and should not stop at 03.

1. original LS 400, if this did not succeed, we don't have a thread today
2. LFA, no explanation needed
3. first gen RX, the first car based luxury SUV, then hybrid luxury SUV
4. IS F, Japan can compete with the best sport sedans from Europe
5. GS 300/400/430/Aristo, proved Japan could meet/beat the best from Germany in the midsize class

1. 1992-1996 Camry, changed the family sedan like the original Taurus did
2. Current Prius, while the first gen was well first, the current one has moved hybrids to the mainstream
3. MKIV Supra, performed like an exotic at nowhere near the price
4. 2000GT, no explanation needed
5. Toyota Crown, still going strong 40 years later

The ES250 does not belong on any worst list. Very reliable car, beautiful interior. The only con was the price.

Best:
1992-1996 Camry/ES300
2005-2007 Highlander Hybrid
Prius
Celica/Supra
LS400

Worst:
Tundra, any year
2007 Camry
Yaris
??
??

It's surprising how few truly bad cars Toyota has made over the years.
