What do you think of Infiniti's branding? (Q & QX names)

Problem is......the proposed Q70 (formerly the M), as we have discussed here before on CAR CHAT, is not large enough to be a true flagship in this luxury class (Cadillac and Lincoln now have the same problem with the MKS/XTS). Like it or not, the M can't truly compete with the Lexus LS460. (neither, in sales, did the old Infiniti Q45 flagship). Infiniti needs to transfer their flagship-banner from the stiff-riding, too-small M class to a true, more refined, softer-riding LS460-competitor, even if that means developing a whole new car to do so.
The QX designation, though, for the SUVs, IMO, makes sense. "X", in auto-nomenclature, usually stands for all-wheel-drive, which, of course, though sometimes found in sedans/wagons, is most likely to be found in SUVs.

These people are complete idiots. This really makes you wonder who is running the show at NIssan.
They claim this builds of the brand equity of the Q45. What brand equity - the Q45 was a flop. The G35 and G37 on the other hand have huge brand equity. They sold many more Gs than Qs. The FX35/FX37 also has huge brand equity. And the M and EX have a following. They had a perfectly good and intelligent set of sub brands which have been thrown out for no good reason. I think this will hurt them.
Plus there is no differentiation from paying up for a larger engine, or getting an M over a G. It all sounds the same.

So to save face from losing the real Q instead of coming up with a true successor they're now simply naming everything the Q??? Please tell me this is a joke! It's not like the Q was a huge success or had a good following, unlike, you know, the G and the FX. They must be proudly thinking, "well, duh! Because every model of ours is a flagship!!"

This solidifies Inifiniti as tier 2 luxury...may even push them to tier 3...yikes...
At least EX, FX and JX is up for grabs...maybe Lexus can use those designations...

I quibble with myself how quirky Infiniti has quietly become quixotic. Quit quietly already...

I'm getting tired of alpha-numeric naming schemes. I know they are chosen to put the focus on the brand and not the model but it's getting to be a pain to remember them all. Not only that, it's nearly impossible to use many combinations for fear of getting sued. For example, the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class was originally to be named the M-Class but BMW threw a fit as that was too close to their M-Line. Because of that, every SUV afterwards had to have a meaningless "L" post-fixed to the category letter in order to maintain consistency.
40 years from now, will people fondly remember the 3000GT VR-4, 335i sDrive M Sport, or XR4Ti,? Or will they remember the Barracuda, Mustang, or Viper?

Alpha-numeric naming has been around too long for lux brands for it to suddenly go away.

Silly idea.
But what's most important is the product. If the next G or M equivalent is a great car, I could care less if they named it after a flower.
