Your still missing the point, not to mention comparing a 4.0L V6 that dates back to 1990 architecture, though the SOHC was had in 1997. So despite the 1/2 (city/hwy) increase from the 3.7, it's really comparing apples and oranges.
Bringing the point back on topic, a small/light truck with efficient EcoBoost 4 and a diesel would do wonders. Call it an Explorer Sport Trac, F-100 or Ranger, either way Ford needs to bring a smaller pickup back. The Ranger was essentially neglected by the end of its run here in the States. A modern Ranger could easily cover the powerbases before the step to a F-150 without stepping on it's older brother toes. And since its for light duty, no need to for BOF. Explorer/Edge bones with a strong turbo powerplant would be more than sufficient to haul and tow. If you need bigger than you step into an F-150. Rangers could easily be getting 30mpg if done right.
Well if you want a smaller commercial vehicle, Ford is hoping to fill that with the Transit Connect. The new one looks pretty impressive on paper. 1,200+ pound payload, 1.6L EcoBoost available, 30+ MPG

Latest spy shots show Ford is preparing a modest facelift for the Ranger pickup truck likely to be revealed in the months to come.
Launched in October 2010, the Ford Ranger is getting ready to undergo a makeover which will also be applied onto the U.S.-spec 2015/2016 Everest since the two models share the same platform. The prototype seen here was spotted undergoing testing somewhere in southern Europe and was featuring a comprehensive camouflage on the front fascia.
Expect a redesigned grille flanked by reshaped headlights and there should also be a different front bumper together with new fog lights. Although the prototype wasn't wearing any disguise at the back, we do expect some minor updates of the taillights.
Engine lineup will likely be carried over so expect a 4-cylinder, 2.2-liter turbodiesel with 150 PS (110 kW) and 375 Nm (277 lb-ft) along with a 3.2-liter TDCi rated at 200 PS (147 kW) and 470 Nm (347 lb-ft). These will work with a six-speed manual transmission or an optional automatic gearbox.
An official reveal will likely occur before the end of the year, with sales to commence at the beginning of 2015.

mmk I was skeptical. For Ford to bring back the Ranger it would have to have some sort of ace in the hole like stellar fuel economy for instance to justify it being sold alongside the F-150 which musters decent mileage for a truck. The 2011 Ranger with the 2.3 I4 returned 22/27 though some owners could get closer to 30. A diesel Ranger would do the trick too, more torque and presumably better mileage. I'm sure Ford is watching the Colorado/Canyon twins closely.

The main reason Ford dropped the Ranger in the American market was that, in general, it was priced too close to the F-150, and potential customers were simply passing it over for the larger truck. So, in typical auto-company fashion, instead of dropping the American-market price like they should have (and maybe decontenting it a little to compensate) they simply axed it.
2015 Ford Ranger Wildtrak spotted in Thailand without camouflage

An undisguised prototype of the 2015 Ford Ranger Wildtrak has been photographed on the streets of Thailand.
Ford Asia Pacific provided a first glimpse of the facelifted Ranger towards the end of November last year through a short teaser clip and now a spy photo of the model has emerged. It shows the 2015 Ranger in the range-topping Wildtrak specification with a more rugged appearance highlighted by the black bumper trim and front grille, black sports bar at the back along with decals on the doors and tub which on this car have been hidden underneath some black tape.
Photos of the interior cabin are not available at this point but expect something along the lines of the 2015 Everest. Ford Asia Pacific is describing the 2015 Ranger as being “smarter, safer, smoother and stronger” compared to the outgoing version but exact details have yet to be released.
Ford started teasing the facelifted 2015 Ranger truck through a video late last year when it revealed the exterior, but we now have some new spy shots, including of the revamped interior.
Nabbed without any covers with black- instead of the teaser model's more glitzy chrome-trimmed grille and mirror caps, the 2015 Ranger has more aggressive looking front end with redesigns lights and bumper.
But we already knew that; what we didn't was that the Blue Oval has overhauled the dashboard with a new LED screen-intensive instrument panel, a completely new center console that incorporates (at least on this trim grade) a much larger infotainment screen and a fresh set of buttons on the steering wheel.
Ford is expected to release the updated 2015 Ranger in the coming weeks – of not earlier.
With so many appearances over the past few days, it doesn't really make much sense for Ford to keep the revamped 2015 Ranger truck under wraps any more.
As was the case of the white 2015 Ranger we showed you on Friday, both of these undisguised examples of Ford's compact pickup truck pictured below are the top-of-the-range Wildtrack.
This edition comes packed with features ranging from big alloy wheels, a roof rack and unique fascia, to a more luxurious interior with what appears to be a leather-clad dashboard top and a large touchscreen display for the infotainment system.
As mentioned before, the 2015 Ranger gets a new front end and tweaked rear, along with a new dashboard design, all of which were first seen on the new Everest, which is the seven-seater SUV version of Ford's body-on-frame pickup truck for the Asia-Pacific region.

The most major visual changes are inside; the gauge cluster's been updated to look like the one in the US-spec 2015 Expedition's, and a Sync2 infotainment rig makes the Ranger experience a lot more modern.
Fancy new optional driver's assistance tech includes lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, and a "driver impairment monitor" that watches your behavior through the truck's fore camera and motion sensors. When the vehicle decides you're getting a little sloppy, it warns you with "gradually louder signals."
The 2.2 liter diesel (158 horsepower/284 lb-ft of torque) and 2.5 liter gasoline engine (164 horsepower/166 lb-ft) are also carried over with economy improvements.
Off-road, the refreshed Ranger 4x4 (in its top trim) has 9" of ground clearance and is rated to wade through 31.5" of water. 28º approach and 25º departure angles are also pretty impressive for a modern pickup.
The 2015 Ford Ranger is built at the company's AutoAlliance facility in Thailand, Silverton Assembly Plant in South Africa, and Pacheco Stamping And Assembly Plant in Argentina. Those factories ship the vehicle to 180 markets, none of which are the United States of America.
Prices for a new Ranger in a place you're allowed to buy one, like Thailand, range from about $23,000 for a single-cab chassis rig to about $36,000 for a loaded full-four door.
Of course, you can pretty much buy a house for that in the South Pacific. But it's still painful to see those prices from here in truck-lovin' Amurica where we have to spend $40,000 just to get four-wheel drive on a new F-150.
It hurts even more knowing how great the modern Ranger is to drive, even as a worn-out, rear-drive, rental-spec rust bucket!
