GM trademarks Riviera name

Autoblog reader Ed sent us this screen shot from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, showing that General Motors has apparently trademarked the name Riviera for use on automobiles. It's no secret that the Riviera name resonates well with anyone familiar with Buick's history, and since the production coupe's death in 1999, the name Riviera has only been resurrected once for the 2007 concept car you see here.

So, why is GM registering the Riviera name again? Your guess is as good as ours. As GM Inside News points out, it could be nothing – automakers will, from time to time, trademark a host of words or alphanumeric sequences (Ford, for example, has trademarked everything from MKA to MKZ for potential Lincoln use). But then again, this isn't the first (or second, or third) time that we've heard rumors about Buick potentially adding a coupe to its lineup, and the Riviera name would certainly be appropriate.

Not a whole lot new since then, Hoovey, but here's the latest news on it:

Note the slight hint of (but not the pointed full-execution of) the early 70's boat-tail. This time, though, it only narrows somewhat....does not come to a full point.

The first Buick Riviera was produced about fifty years ago. This model was in the production up to 1999th year. During that time we have been able to meet as many as eight generations of the Buick Riviera. This model produces the famous American company General Motors. Which class does the Buick Riviera belong? Buick Riviera belongs to a special type sedan. It is a well-styled, practical and very luxurious car. The emphasis is on physical appearance and visual attractiveness. This model has recorded the best sales in China. Therefore, the 2015 Buick Riviera concept is shown last year in Shanghai, China.

New 2015 Buick Riviera will experience great innovative changes. It will have noticeably different look than all his predecessors. However, the production of this model was on a break since 1999. The 2015 Buick Riviera will remain fashionable, attractive, desirable and powerful. For the body will be used new monochromatic colors.

In the interior of the new 2015 Buick Riviera will be used luxury materials. These are high quality aluminum, ebony and premium leather. It will have excellent isolation from outside noise. Passengers will be able to enjoy the peace, tranquility and top comfort. New 2015 Riviera will have enhanced security features. It will have a built increasing number of cameras and better sensors for parking assistance. It will also have lane departure system, blind-spot warning etc. For other key features we have to wait for the official announcement of General Motors. Or we can wait to leak some information.

2015 Buick Riviera will be a plug-in hybrid. It will have two driving modes. One is only the electric. The other is a combination of a gas-electric. The drive should be on all four wheels. The springs and dampers are controlled by electromagnet.

It is not known when the new 2015 Buick Riviera will be launched. There are no information about price. General Motors has only presented the concept. That concept tickled our imagination. We are now eager to find out more about the new Buick Riviera.

What about the Reatta nameplate?

Oh how much I disliked that name, but back then, the car was a looker. Dismal sales though and got the axe after one gen.

Problem was......under the skin, the old Reatta was like almost everything else GM sold back then.................

Among the few exceptions were a couple of rebadged Japanese designs like the Chevy/Geo Nova/Prizm and Chevy Spectrum.
