Don't forget that Mazda is contracted to make Fiat version with Fiat engine using the same chassis. The current 1.4L Turbo is making 180hp in Abarth 500 Competizone, I can see it get tuned up to 200hp while having similar weight to 2.0L Miata. This makes sense for Fiat, because they use the same engine in other applications. Unless Mazda develop a 1.5L or 2.0L turbo and use in other applications as well, I don't think it makes sense for them to do a Mazdaspeed Miata.
i know... is the 1.4l good though? A lot of reviews complain about it in FCA vehicles, not sure what to expect.

To answer to the question, 1.4L multiair in Abarth 500 is one of the best sounding 4 cylinder in the market. If someone is going to mod the car anyway, just get Miata with 2.0L and hope that aftermarket is releasing upgrades for the car early, so you can buy reliable mods based on user data.
From what I heard, most complains are minor issues that still requires visiting dealership. Since this time around, material is sourcing by Mazda, I don't see any reliability concern at all. You can always wait for the while to see if there is any issue with the early production though.
