The pure-electric Toyota RAV4 motors toward production, with Toyota and partner Tesla Motors today announcing that the SUV will be built at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) factory in Woodstock, Ontario beginning in 2012.
This new RAV4 EV promises to be the first mass-market, electric vehicle from Toyota offered in the United States. By targeting the popular small SUV market, Toyota avoids direct competition against the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf, upcoming Focus EV, and its own Prius plug-in.
The RAV4 EV was co-developed with Tesla Motors providing key components and engineering, tapping into Tesla's leadership in energy density. The two companies have been courting a relationship, with Toyota taking a stake in the small California-based automaker, commissioning electric test vehicles, and collaborating on the production RAV4 EV.
The current RAV4 was redesigned for the 2006 model year. Given the announced timeline, it is likely that the 2013 RAV4 EV would be based on a next-generation model. Doing so would allow the vehicle to be specifically engineered to accommodate the electric components.

Toyota Motor Corp. and electric-car maker Tesla Motors Inc. said they will build their jointly-developed RAV4 electric vehicle at Toyota’s assembly plant in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada beginning next year.
As previously announced, Toyota says it will pay Tesla about $100 million for the RAV electric powertrains that include batteries, motors, gear boxes and power electronics. Under the agreement Tesla will build the power systems at its factory in Palo Alto, Calif., and ship them to Ontario for final assembly. The companies said the arrangement takes advantage of certain production efficiencies.
“The Tesla-Toyota joint development team has agreed that building the vehicle at the Woodstock plant on the same line as the gasoline-powered RAV4, will streamline and simplify the production process and guarantee the highest level of quality control,” said Ray Tanguay, chairman of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada. “This is a great example of Toyota’s determination to collaborate with companies with leading edge technology.”

Speaking of Toyota-Tesla ties. Toyota is supposedly going to give Tesla $1 billion. Plus the Tesla SUV should be coming out by 2014 or something.
This partnership should be a very interesting one.
All I can say is, thank you Elon Musk One more thing, I just found out he's 1/2 Canadian, booyah!
