Default 2007-2008 Kia Sorento SUVs recalled over potential airbag fault

2007-2008 Kia Sorento SUVs recalled over potential airbag fault

While airbags can be a major safety asset in the event of an accident, crash test data and real-world incidents have shown that front airbags can actually be dangerous for younger, lighter children. Many newer vehicles now have sensors that turn off the front passenger airbag when the occupant doesn't meet weight requirements, but the sensor may not work in some 2007 and 2008 Kia Sorento models.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced the recall of 10,631 Kia Sorento models built between June 15, 2006 and November 27, 2007. At issue is an Occupant Classification System that may incorrectly classify adults as children. When that happens, the "passenger air bag off" light will illuminate, and the airbag won't go off in the event of an accident.

Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by Kia and instructed to head to a nearby dealership for a free repair. To fix the issue, a Kia technician will update the programming of the OCS controller.

Default VW and Audi recall nearly 170,000 TDI diesel models

VW and Audi recall nearly 170,000 TDI diesel models

Volkswagen has officially announced a recall of 168,275 Jetta TDI and Golf TDI models as well as certain Audi A3 TDI vehicles after a recent stop sale. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the problem stems from the fuel line that feeds injector number two. Over time, the resonance from the injector could cause the line to fail, potentially leading to an engine fire. Volkswagen will replace the line with an improved piece and fit each injector with a vibration damper to prevent the failure from occurring in the future free of charge.

The recall covers certain 2010-2012 Volkswagen Golf TDI and Audi A3 TDI models as well as certain 2009-2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI and Jetta Sporwagen TDI models. Volkswagen will notify owners affected by the issue and work is expected to begin in November.

Default 2011-2012 Chevrolet Corvette recall hatched over faulty hinges

2011-2012 Chevrolet Corvette recall hatched over faulty hinges

General Motors is recalling 5,755 2011-2012 Chevrolet Corvette coupes for potentially faulty hatch hinges that could break loose in a crash. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the rear hatch hinges on Vettes built between January and September don't meet federal weight capacity requirements.

The recall was scheduled to start on Oct. 7. According to the recall, dealers will notify owners of the recall and inspect and replace both hinges for free as necessary.

Default Mercedes-Benz recalling 6,800 diesel models

Mercedes-Benz recalling 6,800 diesel models

Nearly 7,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles are being recalled for potentially leaky fuel filters. Included under the recall are diesel (read: Bluetec) versions of the 2011 E-Class, GL-Class, M-Class, and R-Class, as well as the 2012 S-Class.

The 2011 model year vehicles being recalled were built between January 2010 and April 2011. NHTSA says fuel filters on affected vehicles "may develop leaks from the area around the heating component."

Mercedes-Benz USA will be contacting owners for free inspection and replacement, beginning in November.

Default 2012 Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain recalled over tire pressure monitors

2012 Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain recalled over tire pressure monitors

General Motors is recalling nearly 34,000 2012 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain crossovers over improperly calibrated tire pressure monitoring sensors.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the monitors are required to be calibrated to illuminate a warning light any time a tire is inflated to 25 percent below the recommended level. The sensors in 2012 Equinox and Terrain models may not illuminate until the tire is much further below that threshold. NHTSA says that improperly inflated tires could lead to an accident due to premature wear and excess heat.

In addition, improperly inflated tires can reduce fuel economy and result in poor handling as well. GM will update the body control module on affected vehicles free of charge once the recall gets under way this month.

Of course, this is as good of a time as any to remind drivers to always check their tire pressure at regular intervals, regardless of what the light on the dash says

Default BMW recalls over 32,000 cars and CUVs over fire risk

BMW recalls over 32,000 cars and CUVs over fire risk

BMW has issued a recall of five different model lines covering the years 2008-2011 due to a fire risk. Turbocharged eight- and twelve-cylinder engines in the 5 Series, 5 Series Gran Turismo, 7 Series, X5 and X6 could suffer from overheating circuit boards that control the electric auxiliary water pump.

The overheating board could cause the pump to smoulder, and in extreme cases among the 102 failures, BMW has found there were two engine compartment fires. BMW will send recall notices for 32,000 vehicles and dealers will replace the pump free of charge.

Default Rolls-Royce recalling 2010 Ghost over possible engine fires

Rolls-Royce recalling 2010 Ghost over possible engine fires

No car is invincible to defects, and sometimes, even the folks in the highest tax bracket have to deal with vehicle recalls. The 589 lucky souls who purchased 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost models manufactured between September 2009 and September 2010 will need to make a trip to the dealership (or at least send their butler or chauffeur), as the ultralux sedan is being recalled due to an electric auxiliary water pump that can overheat and potentially result in a fire.

Those of you paying close attention will note that BMW and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a recall for this exact problem earlier this week covering vehicles that use the automaker's turbocharged eight- and twelve-cylinder engines. The Ghost uses a reworked version of the twin-turbo V12 found in the BMW 760Li, and thus, is affected by this water pump problem.

Rolls-Royce will notify owners of this problem and a new auxiliary water pump will be installed free of charge.

Default 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 recalled over airbag concern

2008-2009 Pontiac G8 recalled over airbag concern

General Motors is recalling around 38,000 Pontiac G8 sedans from its 2008 and 2009 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the cars may have a passenger-side airbag flaw that might prevent proper deployment in certain scenarios.

According to NHTSA, the airbag might not adequately protect a fifth percentile woman – that is, a woman around four-foot, 11-inches weighing 108 pounds. The New York Times indicates that the anomaly was found during a crash test conducted by GM's Australian branch, Holden, which was testing the G8's twin (read: Commodore) for head injuries. According to that report, the test in question is specifically tailored to simulate injuries to females, so the results do not apply to men or children.

The issue has been blamed on a seat position sensor that governs airbag deployment rates. NHTSA indicates that when the front passenger seat is moved all the way forward, the faulty sensor may inappropriately trigger a 30-millisecond delay between airbag stages, potentially leading to greater injuries.

With the Pontiac division closed, other GM dealers will reprogram the sensor module of models covered under the recall at no cost to vehicle owners. GM says that no injuries have been reported as a result of this issue.

Post Toyota

In another corporate sputter for beleaguered Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp., the company announced Wednesday that it will recall more than 420,000 vehicles in the U.S. for potential steering problems.

The safety recall to replace what the company termed “the crankshaft pulley on the V6 engine” affects 550,000 cars worldwide -- 283,200 Toyota and 137,000 Lexus vehicles.

The problem reportedly affects 38,000 in Japan and another 25,000 in Australia and New Zealand. In Europe, 14,000 vehicles face a recall along with 10,000 in the Middle East and 14,000 in Asia outside Japan.

There have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the problems, Toyota said in a release from its American headquarters in Torrance, Ca.

If not corrected, the outer ring of the engine's crankshaft pulley may become misaligned with the inner ring, causing noise or a warning signal to light up. The belt for the power steering pump may become detached from the pulley, making it suddenly more difficult to turn the driving wheel, the release said.

Since September 2009, Toyota has issued more than 13 million product recalls in the U.S. alone. With the company facing hundreds of lawsuits, safety experts and industry analysts contend that quality problems could haunt the world's largest automaker for years to come, affecting both its reputation and bottom line.

In February, Toyota announced that it would recall 2.17 million additional vehicles to correct mechanical defects that could cause them to accelerate out of control.

The most recent U.S. recall includes the 2004 and 2005 Camry, Highlander, Sienna and Solara, the 2004 Avalon and the 2006 Highlander HV. The Lexus recall affects the 2004 and 2005 ES330 and RX330 and 2006 RX400h, officials said.

Starting in January, Toyota will mail owners a notification to make an appointment with an authorized dealer to have their car inspected once a sufficient number of replacement parts have been produced.

Meanwhile, consumers who detect any abnormal noises are asked to make an appointment to have the vehicle inspected, the release said.

The company urged owners to with questions to visit the company site at www.toyota.com/recall or www.lexus.com/recall. They can also contact Toyota in the U.S. at 800-331-4331 or and Lexus at 800-255-3987.

Default Cadillac recalls small number of 2012 CTS models over brake pedal fears

General Motors is recalling a small number of 2012 Cadillac CTS models for concerns over the vehicle's braking system. According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the affected cars could have a power vacuum brake boost pushrod retention nut that may not have been torqued to the proper specification. This could cause the pushrod to separate from the brake pedal, which may result in a loss of braking ability. Yikes.

The recall, however, only affects 624 CTS models, all of which were manufactured between October 21 and October 26 of this year. Cadillac dealers will inspect the pushrod retention nut, and if necessary, re-torque it to the proper spec. Of course, this service will come at no cost to owners.

Default Nissan 370Z and Infiniti G37 recalled over pinching windows

Nissan 370Z and Infiniti G37 recalled over pinching windows

Nissan is recalling certain 370Z and Infiniti G37 Coupe models due to an improperly calibrated auto-reverse feature on the vehicle's windows. Around 1,788 2011 and 2012 models may have been built with a window switch controller that won't actuate the auto-reverse quickly enough. Should someone accidentally get a body part trapped in the window, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that a "pinch injury" may result. It's unclear whether anyone has been injured as a result of the calibration error at this juncture, but Nissan says that the automaker will fix the power window switches free of charge.

The recall is set to begin around November 28, and owners of affected vehicles can expect to hear from Nissan shortly about the program

Default 2012 Dodge Journey, Fiat 500 recalled over contaminated brake fluid

2012 Dodge Journey, Fiat 500 recalled over contaminated brake fluid

Chrysler has issued a recall affecting a small number of 2012 Dodge Journey and 2012 Fiat 500 models built between October 24 and 26 of this year. These models – about 340 in total – are being recalled due to contaminated brake fluid that was put in during the vehicles' assembly. According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these vehicles "may experience a degradation of the sealing components within the brake system."

To solve the problem, Chrysler dealers will replace all of the vehicle's components that come in contact with the hydraulic braking fluid. Of course, this service will be done free of charge, and the official safety recall is expected to begin during the month of December.

Default 2012 Subaru Impreza, Legacy and Outback models recalled over excessive brake pedal

2012 Subaru Impreza, Legacy and Outback models recalled over excessive brake pedal travel

The 2012 Subaru Impreza is just now going on sale, but it's already facing its first major recall. According to a statement from Subaru of America, all 2012 Impreza models built through November 15 are being recalled to replace the brake master cylinder after a number of customers reportedly noted that their cars have "greater than normal" brake pedal travel. The automaker issued a formal statement saying:

While the brakes in the affected population remain operational, repairs involve replacement of the brake master cylinder to correct a potential brake pedal travel condition that is greater than usual.

Subaru's statement also cites that 2012 model year Legacy and Outback models built between October 17 and November 23 are also being recalled for the same problem. The exact number of affected cars has not been released at this time.

What's more, according to CarBuzz.com, Subaru issued a memo to its dealers on November 25 mandating a Stop Sale "effective immediately for 2012 Imprezas as well as certain 2012 Legacy and Outback units." In its official statement – available after the jump – Subaru does not officially confirm that these models are being grounded at its dealerships.

Default Honda expands airbag recall again, still searching for 640 airbags

Honda expands airbag recall again, still searching for 640 airbags

Honda is still looking for a few needles in its haystack of 2001-2003 models, as it expands a recall that dates back to 2008. The recall concerns defective driver's airbag inflators, and it's a serious issue, one that has already resulted in a dozen injuries and at least one death.

The recall covers the 2001 and 2002 Accord, 2001 to 2003 Civic, 2001 to 2003 Odyssey, 2002 and 2003 CR-V, 2003 Pilot, 2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2 TL and 2003 Acura 3.2 CL. This latest expansion of the recall is necessary because Honda still hasn't found all the defective parts, with 640 of the inflators still unaccounted for. Some were sold as service parts, meaning that their whereabouts cannot be easily traced.

"Because Honda is unable to determine the specific vehicles that may have received the affected service parts through existing information," said Honda's statement, "Honda will inspect an additional approximately 603,000 vehicles and replace those parts as necessary."

Honda will be contacting affected owners by mail later in the month, and the information will also be available on the Honda and Acura websites at www.recalls.honda.com and www.recalls.acura.com.

Default Nissan recalls 2011 Rogue over power steering concern

Nissan recalls 2011 Rogue over power steering concern

Nissan and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have announced a recall for certain 2011 Rogue models. Some vehicles may have been manufactured with an incorrectly installed circuit board within the vehicle's electronic power steering assist control unit. Nissan says that, as a result, the terminal may experience additional stress on the circuit board's solder, which could eventually result in a failure. Such a failure could cause the power steering assist to stop working altogether, which may increase the amount of effort it takes to steer the vehicle and result in a crash.

A total of 7,365 2011 Nissan Rogue models are covered in the recall, and owners can expect to be notified by Nissan soon. The automaker will replace the electronic power steering module free of charge if necessary once the recall begins this month.
