Its only one month into the new year with Lexus coming off of a gigantic December. No need to sound the Lexus alarm just yet. Probably had a lot to do with inventory this month more than anything. You just dont sell 15-16k less vehicles (or whatever the number is) from one month to the next because all of a sudden people notice your lineup is old. It was old last month too! I do not expect sales to be as high as last year, but I do expect Lexus to still be competitive. Who knows, the CT may drive some new traffic into the showroom next month. Maybe the introduction of the CT will boost HS sales a little (lol).

I do agree with the points about them introducing all four sedans within the span of 2 years, and I mentioned it then. Its pretty stupid IMO and for the immediate future the RX will have to hold it down for the brand as that is the newest volume vehicle they have.

So CT, probably new ES the last month or so of this year, maybe a 2nd refresh for the LS like they did with the IS and Toyota did with the Avalon or maybe they will let it die like they are doing the GS.

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported January 2011 sales of 14,267, a decrease of 9.1% versus January of 2010, primarily due to a substantial reduction in fleet sales this month. Mazda has placed a high priority on the strength of residual values, as proven by the company’s top-3 placing in ALG’s most recent study, and CX-9’s positioning as the top-placed vehicle in its category in residual value.

As consumer confidence begins to return, sales of crossover SUVs are on the rise, with Mazda’s successful choices posting record sales gains for the month. CX-9 posted its best January ever with sales of 2,054 vehicles, up 35.9%. CX-7 recorded its best January since 2008, with sales of 2,357 vehicles, up 45.3%.

Mazda5 recorded its best sales month since April 2010 with 1,547 vehicles sold. The all-new 2012 Mazda5, with its superior packaging and the unique functionality of its flexible seat arrangements, sliding doors, stylish design, outstanding handling, fuel efficiency and high level of safety, arrives in dealerships this month.

Rounding out Mazda’s North American sales, Mazda Motor de Mexico (MMdM) reported its best January ever, with sales of 2,258 vehicles representing an increase of 32%, while Mazda Canada Inc. (MCI) sold 3,688 vehicles, down 12% compared to last January.

Mazda North American Operations is headquartered in Irvine, Calif. and oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico through nearly 900 dealers. Operations in Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario; and in Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

BREA, Calif. (AP) -- American Suzuki Motor Corp. said Tuesday that its January U.S. auto sales rose 26 percent thanks to a popular sport utility vehicle and growing demand for one of its cars. Suzuki is one of many auto makers to kick off the new year with strong sales.

TOP SELLERS: Suzuki sold 978 SX4 SUVs, though sales were down 15%.

i'm laughing hysterically.

what the hell happened with lexus.

actually, what happened with all the japanese brands.
all of them took a hit.

benz and bmw not so much.

I blame it on the bad weather last month. All that chitty weather cost a lot of sales on the east coast.
buying a car is the last thing people think about when it's snowing and icy

The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported January sales of 18,656 vehicles, an increase of 21.1% from the 15,410 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago.

"The combination of strong December sales and miserable weather in many areas provided a real challenge for January," said Jim O'Donnell, President and CEO of BMW of North America, LLC. "On the other hand, the new BMW X3 and MINI Countryman played a strong role in January's percentage gain even though both continue building up their model range, which we will see in the next couple of months."

BMW Brand Sales

Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 20.8% in January for a total of 15,905 compared to 13,163 vehicles sold in January, 2010.

In January, best performing vehicles included the new X3 SAV – officially on sale in the U.S. for only 2 weeks - up 273.3% to 1,075 units; the 5 Series, up 76.2% to 4,350 units and the X5, up 23.6% to 3,038 units. The BMW SAV segment (X3, X5, X6) continues to show important growth with sales up 42.8% from the previous January.

BMW Pre-Owned Vehicles

Chrysler Group LLC today reported U.S. sales of 70,118, a 23% increase compared with sales in January 2010 (57,143 units).

The entire Jeep® product lineup, the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans, and the Ram pickup truck helped drive the 23% sales increase in January, the 10th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases.

“We have set the foundation for a year of sales growth with our 16 all-new or significantly-revamped models for 2011,” said Fred Diaz, President and CEO – Ram Truck Brand and Lead Executive for U.S. Sales. “We have started the year on a strong note, and we intend to continue gaining sales momentum as our new 2011 models hit dealer showrooms during this first quarter.”

Hot off their exciting premieres at the North American International Auto Show in January, the all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 series sedans have begun shipping to dealers and the new 2011 Jeep Compass compact SUV has already arrived in dealerships.

Chrysler Group’s 16 all-new or significantly-refreshed models, representing 75% of its nameplates, are arriving in dealerships in volume. The all-new 2011 Dodge Durango 3-row SUV and the new 2011 Chrysler 200 mid-size sedan landed in dealerships in January, as did the new 2011 model year Dodge Journey, Dodge Grand Caravan, Dodge Avenger, and Chrysler Town & Country minivan.

The Jeep, Dodge and Ram Truck brands started the year with a bang, posting double-digit percentage sales increases in January, led by the Jeep brand’s 47% sales gain versus a year ago. The Chrysler Town & Country, the original luxury minivan and the nation’s top-selling minivan in 2010, led the Chrysler brand with a 45% sales increase in January versus a year ago.

Chrysler Group finished the month with an 89-day supply of inventory (260,533 units). U.S. industry sales figures for January are projected at an estimated 12.8 SAAR.

January 2011 U.S. Sales Highlights by Brand

Jeep® Brand

Jeep brand sales were up 47% in January compared with the same month in 2010. All Jeep models currently in production posted a sales increase in January, led by the brand’s flagship Jeep Grand Cherokee. Sales of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the brand’s volume leader, increased 130% in January versus a year ago. Sales of the iconic Jeep Wrangler were up 32% compared with January a year ago.

The Jeep brand is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the brand is creating distinctive, premium 70th Anniversary Edition models of each vehicle in its lineup that pay homage to the history of the legendary Jeep brand. All Jeep 70th Anniversary Edition models will arrive in showrooms in the 1st quarter, and all will be available in a unique Bronze Star exterior paint, in addition to Bright Silver and Black.

The Jeep brand unveiled its new 2011 Jeep Compass compact SUV at the North American International Auto Show in January. Offering unsurpassed 4x4 fuel economy and off-road capability in the compact-SUV segment, the 2011 Compass features a stunning new sophisticated design, with cues coming directly from the brand’s premium icon, the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Chrysler Brand

The Chrysler brand’s Town & Country minivan posted a 45% sales increase in January. Town & Country had more sales in the United States than any other minivan in 2010, and led Chrysler brand sales for the year. Building on that momentum, the Chrysler brand recently introduced a new Town & Country minivan for 2011. In January, the Chrysler Group celebrated the production launch of the new 2011 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan at the Windsor (Canada) Assembly Plant.

The all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 series sedans premiered at the 2011 North American International Auto Show in January. The new 300 was named in January as a Top Safety Pick for 2011 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, marking the 1st time the model has achieved the Insurance Institute’s highest rating. The Chrysler 300 series delivers grand-touring performance and world-class ride and handling with best-in-class V-6 engine power and new 2nd-generation E-segment chassis architecture. Shipments of the all-new 300 series to dealers began in late January.

Ram Truck Brand

The Ram Truck brand, named the 2010 Manufacturer of the Year by Off-Road Adventures magazine, posted an 18% sales increase in January. Ram pickup truck sales were up 22%, compared with the same month in 2010. Both the Light Duty and Heavy Duty pickups posted double-digit percentage sales gains in January versus a year ago. AUTOMOBILE Magazine named the Ram 1500 to its annual list of All-Stars late last year. It marked the 2nd consecutive year that the Ram 1500 was named to the list.

Dodge Brand

Dodge brand sales were up 22% in January versus a year ago, led by sales of the Dodge Grand Caravan, the brand’s volume leader. The minivan’s sales increased 82% in January compared with sales in January 2010. Chrysler Group last month celebrated the production launch of the new 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan, as well as its Chrysler brand sibling, the Town & Country minivan, at the Windsor (Canada) Assembly Plant.

The all-new 2011 Dodge Charger in January was named a Top Safety Pick for 2011 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, marking the 1st time the muscle car has achieved the Insurance Institute’s highest rating.

Sales of the Dodge Nitro mid-size sport utility were up 43% in January, while sales of the Dodge Challenger muscle car were up 50%. The all-new 2011 Dodge Durango 3-row SUV began arriving in Dodge dealerships in January.

GX and LX are low volume but did create a nice uptick at their introductions. Sales of both will undoubtedly slow down this year. RX is well into it's lifecycle and won't see a refresh or update for a year and a half. HS is a lost cause and the SC is dead.

Suddenly, the CT is looking like Lexus' only ace in the hole and that is a long shot. The only other wild card is whether or not the new ES will arrive later this year with the new Camry. That could be a game changer, but nobody knows.

It's going to be a loooong two years in Lexus Land and I'm sure dealers are unhappy about it. Putting off the GS until MY2013 was a very bad idea IMO.
I think Lexus put off the GS to get it right and not have the problems like the 3GS had. Better to delay it and get it right than to rush it.

I agree that redesigning all the major models so closely is not the best idea, but I think in the future Lexus will have more staggered releases, especially with more model variants and F variants coming.

As for LX and GX, I disagree. I think both will hold steady sales-wise. RX sales will continue to remain high.

CT sales should be a slight boost. It was confirmed that there will be two new Lexus models debuting this year. One is the CT, and the other one was not named. However, I am willing to bet that second new Lexus will be the new ES. So I think at the end of the year the new ES will debut and will give a nice boost to the brand.

Next year should be very big for Lexus, along with 2013.

What happened to the Japanese brands? I don't know, you tell me. Toyota sales were up big-time. The major Toyota models had great sales compared to last January. For the month, Camry once again smoked the competition and the Corolla easily beat the Civic in sales.

Yes Lexus sales were low for the month, but that is coming off a tremendous December that Lexus had. No need to jump to conclusions after only one month.

This is deja vu. Every year someone on CL always proclaims the world is ending with regards to Lexus sales, and that Lexus will lose the sales crown, yet they always end up being wrong .

Strategic Vision is the industry’s most comprehensive value study, ranking the best vehicles per dollar spent. Wow, HUGE drop for Honda sales in Canada. Mazda outsold Honda in January, lol, that is total fail for Honda. I must say, I am REALLY glad that it seems people in Canada are FINALLY opening their eyes to the absolutely mediocrity that is Honda's current lineup, starting first and foremost with ugly, borderline-offensive styling.

Oh and SICK, I believe that should say 17% down for Lexus, not up.

Looking more into the data...

I didn't realize how bad TL sales were for the month, just terrible. Once Acura's volume seller, the TL is almost a joke sales-wise, especially considering it's not an old product yet, and it isn't due for a redesign for several years.

Strong month for the Chevy Cruze; it easily outsold the new Elantra and the Focus, although I'm not sure what the inventory situation is for either the Focus or Elantra. Cruze was close to outselling the Civic for the month. Too early to make any conclusions, but this could certainly be an indication that bland and inoffensive still sells (despite media and PR hype to the contrary), since the Cruze is more inoffensive/bland than either the Focus or the Elantra.

This was another month of Genesis sales below 2,000, and Sonata sales in January were below 14,000. Sonata in January was 6th in the midsize sedan segment. The Sonata for the month was outsold by the Camry, Altima, Accord, Fusion, and Malibu. 4 out of those 5 cars are due for major redesigns soon. In other words, the Sonata was outsold by all the major midsize competitors, despite most of the major competing sedans being dated.

Lexus don't have much to worry about as long as they have the RX and ES for sell. People seem to flock to those two vehicles regardless.

Post Hyundai

Hyundai Motor America today announced record January sales of 37,214 units, up 22 percent versus 2010.

January retail sales were up 58% from last year thanks to continued strong performance from Sonata (sales up 150%) and the concurrent launches of the all-new 40-mpg Elantra, Sonata Hybrid and Equus premium luxury sedan. Fleet mix was 12%.

"Our January sales results were encouraging, continuing the momentum of our best year ever, amidst signals that the economy is stabilizing on a trajectory of steady, sustained growth,"
said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America's executive vice president, national sales.

Sales of the American-made Elantra and Sonata were up 26% and 150%, respectively. Genesis continued its impressive growth with the 19th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases. Equus, Hyundai's all-new flagship outsold several flagship competitors in its 1st full month of sales. According to Automotive Lease Guide, Equus residual value is unsurpassed by Lexus LS, BMW 7-Series, and Mercedes S-Class.

Hyundai sold 4,792 cars (2011 Elantra sedan and 2011 Sonata Hybrid) with 40-mpg EPA fuel economy highway ratings, in keeping with its commitment to put more 40-mpg cars on the road than any other automaker in 2011. "It makes sense for all of us to be more transparent with sales data on high fuel-efficiency vehicles," said John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America's president and CEO. "At Hyundai, 40-mpg isn't a marketing charade. High-volume, high-value cars like our 2011 Elantra sedan, which gets 40-mpg across the board without extra cost fuel economy packages, demonstrate our commitment to leading the industry in fuel efficiency. We'd love to see other automakers report sales of their 40-mpg models."

Beginning this month, Hyundai Motor America will also begin reporting monthly sales-weighted Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) results for the Hyundai brand to provide journalists, policy-makers and consumers with additional data to promote more meaningful dialogue on the feasibility of future fuel efficiency targets for the industry. Today, industry fuel economy reporting lags sales reporting as official CAFE data is calculated on a completed model year basis, with the most recent data published in November 2010, covering the 2009 model year.

For January 2011, Hyundai's sales-weighted CAFE level was 34.7 miles per gallon, with a model year mix for the month of 86% 2011 and 14% 2010 model year vehicles. This is a significant increase from Hyundai's most recent official CAFE level for the 2009 model year of 31.7 mpg. "In 2008, Hyundai had committed to achieve a CAFE level of at least 35 mpg by 2015. Since then, we've redoubled our efforts to introduce affordable fuel-efficient technology across our lineup, and now we can confidently project achieving a 35 mpg average several years early," said John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America's president and CEO. "With 2025 CAFE targets being discussed in the 47-to-62 mpg range, Hyundai's fuel economy and sales achievements across a wide range of vehicle segments may provide some confidence to policy-makers that this industry can achieve remarkable fuel efficiency gains without compromising vehicle sales, appeal, value, or customer satisfaction."
