FIRST-EVER FORD POLICE INTERCEPTOR UTILITY DEBUTS, OFFERS PORTFOLIO OF CHOICE FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT

• Ford's new Police Interceptor utility is designed to complement the sedan introduced earlier this year and give law enforcement agencies a comprehensive choice for pursuit vehicles

• The purpose-built sedan and utility Police Interceptors will deliver at least 20 percent better fuel economy than the current Crown Victoria Police Interceptor

• Ford's utility and sedan Police Interceptors will debut simultaneously when production of the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor ceases in late 2011

It know it looks like a dark beard/moustache, but I don't think that's part of his face. It looks more like something mounted on the center-dash....probably video/speed-detection gear or a camera.

I wonder what the thought process is behind using something like this for a police vehicle. I would have to believe that a sedan is going to be faster, handle better, stop better, and get better MPG.

When they need to tow equipment, they use SUVs set up properly for the task. Not this thing.

Interesting. One aspect of the new LEO cars is that on a stop, it sure is a pretty light show.

MPG isn't a big issue for police since they're PARKED most of the time! moreover, the space advantage of this vehicle is useful because putting suspects in it is easier. this vehicle can probably handle dogs a lot easier. and this just makes it more flexible.

i can relate as a) i have a current gen explorer , and b) i no longer find sedans very useful - and clearly i'm not alone as cuv/suv/wagon sales continue to climb. it's just handier!

as far as handling, tell that to a cayenne owner. and a police package probably makes this explorer handle surprisingly well. i wonder if the public could get some of the goodies?

my local PD uses the the new Tahoe (well...they've always got money for the current model...) as the Police SUV for the higher-ranked officers.

Seeing one make a u-turn after you pass by them late at night is definitely an imposing sight in the rear-view mirror. Actually---they're always imposing.

I wonder if they'll pick these up at all?
