Bonneville Speed Week 2010
hey guys. i just got back tonight from Utah. speed week was amazing. a lot of work to get the car ready but it was a fun learning experience and you sure cant beat seeing a streamliner fly by in the 400+mph
Here is the link to my photobucket with all the pictures i took. hot rods were taken at night so some of them didn't turn out as well as i would like.

if you have any specific questions about any of the cars let me know. i talked to most of the drivers whose pictures i took.
For bonneville my boss prepped a 1966 Saab 850 Monte Carlo to run in the J-PRO class. the motor is sleeved 850 to make it a 750cc. its a 3 cylinder, 2 stroke, 3 Solex side draft carbs from the Saab Sonnet II. the car also has a dry carbon air box that has been "modified" for the 3 cylinder. originally the air box was for a US F3 VW engine but my boss had a few spares left. he cut one up and we had A&L auto body in Palatine, IL fiberglass it to size. its not pretty but it works. i had some Apexi EGT and AEM UEGO gauges laying around so i put them into the car. inside the air box are aluminum velocity stacks also borrowed from old VW US F3 engines and modified to fit the Saab. car made 104hp and 120lb-ft torque in Chicago on a 96*F day with almost 100% humidity. not bad for a 50 year old 2 stroke lol
the rules are really vague as far as engine modification so we are debating for next year to either do a Weber triple downdraft carb off a Lancia or fuel injection.
we ended up burning a piston on tuesday. after that i got everything packed up and had over a day and a half to walk around and take pictures.
here is our car:

the story on some of the cars:
i took picture of the opel because it reminded me of last year i helped build one that was a widebody with a built, bored, and supercharged.
the vintage cars were all just at a meet.
the "Mangler" slammed beetle has a Corvair engine swap, seats from a WWII bomber and the shifter linkage tube is an old machine gun barrel
the 9717 Blue Pontiac didnt get its record, at least on tuesday, but the son of the owner got his B class license to go 200+mph. great accomplishment in itself
the white F350 is what i drove from chicago to wendover, ut. never drove a pickup before that in my life. now have 3000 miles of experience lol
our car was a first year entry and some of the stuff did not meet SCTA and BNI requirement so we had to fix it 1500 miles from home. luckily we found a former wisconsin boy out there that was generous enough to let us use his shop for 2 days to work on the car. otherwise we would be driving home after one day. the pictures are of his shop. His name is KIP and the shop is called Autopools. he worked on the JCB streamliner that went 355mph a few years ago with a diesel engine. the trunk inside is his Diamond T project with a small block chevy instead of the original straight 6 flat head motor.
the black hayabusa ran a naked bike class. it has a gt40r turbo on it. yeah i know, huge. the guy was off the record by 0.3mph last i talked to him/
the gray honda was a first year car with a 600cc engine running blown gas class. really neat car.
the tan and orange lakester(torpedo looking thing) had a ford model B engine and runs in the 180+mph range.
the green huge Buick had a fuel injected, supercharged, straight 8 engine in. sounded absolutely obnoxious....just how i like it.
the "sir speedy" honda was a 1000cc bike. they came with the biggest trailer i have ever seen for a motorcycle team. the bike was ridden by Leslie Porterfield "world fastest woman in a bike". shes really cute to say the least.
the blue stretched saab was built by a retired montana farmer. the car has an almost 500cid supercharged engine making 2000hp. the car is still fwd. he was running in the 320+mph range. he chose the chassis of how aerodynamic it was. guess saab did something right. after all they were built from planes after WWII
then came the ferrari enzo i caught going through tech. car has the roll cage wrapped in hand stiched red leather to keep it classy. it has a "dual T4 precision turbo" according to the mechanic and the fabricator of the car. they didnt know any of the hp numbers. they didnt even run the car. they finished it and brought it out to bonneville. they were going for 273mph.
913 corvette holds 4 or 6 records at bonneville, cant remember what the guy said, and they also run the texas mile in it. thats a 235+mph machine
the orange Crosley was our competitor for speed week unfortunately they couldnt get anything going with constant misfires.
the blue BoneEvil car is a DB with a 2 cylinder horizontally opposed, air cooled engine
the blue rx7 was fast. i tried to talk to the owner but he didnt speak a lick of english. when i asked him what speed they were going for he tried using fingers and then just pointed to his hat that said "200mph club". that car was going after the Racing Beat rx7 record of 235mph. i dont know what they were running for power but people estimate 800-1000hp
the speed demon was the coolest one of them all. i saw, but unfortunately didnt record, it going 418mph on exit speed. its a dart built v8 with a huge turbo.
sorry for the long story. im still excited about it.

Cool!
I know the guy who prepped this car:

He's a family friend here in Pittsburgh. Jim (standing by the trunk in the black shirt) preps lots of SCCA race cars as well, plus he's a pretty good shoe himself.
Told me they popped the motor at 240 as they entered the measured mile. The car already holds a record @ 262 (I think) but they were anticipating much faster. They'll be back at the Flats in October for the World Finals to try again.
