Exclamation June 2010 Monthly Sales Thread

Another month gone by.

Light vehicle sales may stall in ‘tortoise-like' U.S. recovery

U.S. auto sales this month probably posted the smallest increase since February as consumers concerned about unemployment and the economy avoid large purchases, analysts said.

Industrywide deliveries in the month may reach an annualized rate of 11.2 million vehicles, the average of eight analysts' estimates compiled by Bloomberg. That would top last year's depressed 9.7 million-unit pace while declining from 11.6 million in May, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

The figures will be announced Thursday.

“Despite all the talk about things getting better, it doesn't seem that way in many people's homes or in their bottom line,” said Jessica Caldwell, director of industry analysis at auto researcher Edmunds.com in Santa Monica, Calif. “It's going to be a tortoise-like recovery.”

U.S. auto sales have “flat-lined” since last year's third quarter because consumers have been unwilling to make big purchases, Mark Fields, Ford Motor Co.'s president of the Americas, said last week. The 9.7 percent jobless rate and continued lower home prices have hurt consumers' confidence and are keeping them out of showrooms, dealers and analysts said.

J.D. Power & Associates cut its estimate of individuals' purchases this year to 9.5 million from about 9.7 million, said Jeff Schuster, an analyst with the researcher. J.D. Power estimates 11.8 million, including less-profitable sales to fleet buyers. Annual auto deliveries averaged 16.8 million from 2000 through 2007 and fell to 10.4 million last year, the lowest in 27 years.

Light vehicle sales in June may match the 11.2 million pace this year through May, trailing Ford's 2010 forecast of 11.3 million to 12.3 million, Fields said.

‘Gives us pause'

“The consumer is feeling a bit better, but not enough to go out and go back to the old ways of spending,” Fields said in a presentation last week. “It gives us pause because of the tight labor market and the overall situation in the credit markets.”

The Conference Board said yesterday that its confidence index slumped to 52.9 this month from a revised 62.7 in May. The private research group's June figure was less than the lowest forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News.

Showroom traffic is down 20 percent at Frank Ursomarso's GMC-Buick dealership in Wilmington, Del.

“The numbers are way down,” Ursomarso said. “We're a big banking town, and they've had a tough go in the newspapers with the banking reform bill. Day after day of negative stories.”

Ford probably overtook Toyota Motor Corp. to become second in U.S. sales in the first half of 2010, according to TrueCar.com in Santa Monica, Calif. Ford, which last outsold Toyota in 2006, might post a 16 percent sales jump, the average of six analysts' estimates, while Toyota's may rise 9 percent, the average of four estimates.

Toyota said its global sales increased 13.4 percent year-on-year in May despite worldwide safety recalls.

The Toyota group, which includes brands Daihatsu and Hino trucks, said it sold 676,675 units in May, up from 596,887 a year ago, the company said.

The world's largest automaker said global production rose 27.0 percent to 637,675 units from a year earlier, when the industry was in the grip of the financial crisis.

Toyota's sales have posted healthy growth from last year's mid-crisis lows despite the company yanking around 10 million vehicles worldwide since late last year for safety issues.

Other Japanese makers also reported sales and production gains Monday as the industry rebounds on stronger global demand, helping drive Japan's export-led recovery from deep recession.

Second-largest maker Honda Motor marked its 11th straight monthly increase of domestic sales, which rose 18.0 percent on-year, while producing 278,543 autos in May, up 42.8 percent. It did not give global sales figures.

Third-largest Nissan saw its exports in May nearly double to 47,993 units, up 94.9 percent from the same month last year. It produced 309,287 units globally in the month, up 41.9 percent from a year ago.

Fourth-largest maker Mitsubishi Motors said its global production gained 85.8 percent from a year ago. Close rival Mazda saw worldwide production soar 46.0 percent.

Fields said in a presentation last week. “It gives us pause because of the tight labor market and the overall situation in the credit markets.”

This table shows estimates for car and light-truck sales in the U.S. Estimates for companies are a percentage change from June 2009. Forecasts for the seasonally adjusted annual rate, or SAAR, are in millions of vehicles. The estimates are based on daily selling rates. June had 25 selling days, the same as last year.

Toyota recalls

Toyota's gain would be slower than the market's overall increase of 15 percent. The automaker recalled more than 8 million vehicles since September for defects linked to unintended acceleration.

“The clear winner is Ford, while the loser is Toyota,”
said Jesse Toprak, TrueCar's vice president of industry trends. “Ford has built momentum since they refused government help and they've got the best lineup they've ever had.”

General Motors Co. may post a 16 percent gain this month, the average of six analysts' estimates. GM's predecessor entered bankruptcy on June 1, 2009, and the new company emerged in July. Chrysler Group LLC's sales may rise 33 percent from last June, when the company was emerging from a 41-day bankruptcy and doing little marketing.

Honda increase

Honda Motor Co. may post an increase of 9 percent in June, the average of four estimates. Nissan Motor Co. may report a gain of 27 percent, the average of four estimates.

The U.S. automakers will “largely outperform the industry,” Brian Johnson, a Barclays Capital analyst in Chicago, wrote in a June 28 note. “Toyota likely once again underperformed the industry by a wide margin, perhaps still reflecting some payback following several months of particularly generous deals offered to buyers.”

Sales incentives rose 1.1 percent from May as Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. boosted discounts while U.S. automakers reduced them, according to TrueCar. The industry average discount of $2,870 per car was up 6.2 percent from last June, TrueCar estimated.

U.S. automakers, seeking to boost profits, have pulled back from offering big discounts. That strategy will be tested if auto sales remain sluggish, J.D. Power's Schuster said.

“It's gut-check time,”
Schuster said. “If we see a continued stall in the recovery, the temptation will be there to jump-start things.”

Tighter inventories

Unlike past slowdowns, inventory levels aren't high, which could temper automakers' urge to increase discounts, Schuster said. Car companies had 49 days of supply at the end of May, 8 fewer days than in April and lower than the two months once considered the industry's standard, J.D. Power said.

That tight inventory is costing sales for Gordon Stewart, who owns four Chevrolet outlets in Georgia, Florida and Michigan and a Toyota store in Alabama.

“We could sell more cars if we had them, but Detroit is being very conservative in its build,”
Stewart said. “We've had a drop off in traffic, but when somebody does finally come in, you don't have a car to sell them. It's like a double whammy.”

* Sixth straight month that GM’s four brand’s sales increased by more than 20 percent
* Calendar-year-to-date sales for GM’s four brands are up 32 percent
* GM full-size pickup sales increase 27 percent; up 12 percent year-to-date
* GM crossover sales are up 81 percent year-to-date
DETROIT – June sales for Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac increased by a combined 36 percent to 194,828 units in the United States. This is the sixth straight month in which sales for GM’s brands increased year-over-year by more than 20 percent. Year-to-date sales for the four brands also have risen 32 percent to 1,069,577 units – an increase of 258,368 units compared to last year.

The increase was fueled by the continuing success of the company’s launch vehicles, its growing sales of compact, midsize and luxury crossovers, and some recovery in the markets for pickups and full-size SUVs.

The resurgence in large pickup truck sales was a key factor behind June’s results, according to Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. Sales Operations. Combined sales of the Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Avalanche, and GMC Sierra were up 27 percent for the month, compared to June 2009 and are up 12 percent year-to-date.

“As companies continue to invest in their businesses, we expect this segment to continue to recover,” said Johnson. “We think the release of some pent up demand in the pickup market is an indication that a fundamental part of the U.S. economy is gradually strengthening.”

GM’s launch vehicles continue to be a driving factor behind the company’s sales increases. Retail sales of the Chevrolet Equinox and Camaro, Buick LaCrosse and Regal, GMC Terrain, and Cadillac SRX and CTS Wagon have increased 222 percent year-to-date through June and totaled 172,083. This represents about one out of every four retail sales for GM.

June Crossover Performance Keeps GM the Industry Crossover Leader

Chevrolet and GMC dealers reported 16,093 deliveries of the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain – a 208 percent improvement from June 2009. For the year, sales of these vehicles are up almost 193 percent, to 94,105 sales through June.

Mid-size crossovers Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia continued to show improvement. During June, their combined sales increased 39 percent. Year-to-date, they are up 28 percent.

The Cadillac SRX luxury crossover maintained its impressive run with an increase of 462 percent during the month. Year-to-date, SRX sales are up 488 percent.

Month-end dealer inventory in the U.S. stood at about 438,000 units, which is about 30,000 higher compared to May 2010, and about 144,000 lower than June 2009.

Porsche Reports Sales Up in June

Begins Selling New Cayenne and Panamera V6

ATLANTA, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars, Cayenne SUVs and the Panamera Gran Turismo in the United States, today announced June sales in the U.S. of 2,141 units compared to the same period last year when it sold 902, an increase of 137 percent.
Halfway through the calendar year, Porsche has now sold 10,984 new cars, ahead of last year’s six-month pace of 9,659, up 14 percent.
All models in Porsche’s portfolio enjoyed strong showings, led by the Panamera, which recorded sales of 739 units for the month. June’s results represent this four-door Porsche’s best one-month total to date. While the majority of Panamera sales were V8s, the record month also included sales of the newly launched V6 powered Panameras, which just began arriving at dealerships around the country in late June.
Sales of Porsche’s popular Cayenne SUV increased significantly for the month of June as the German automaker began delivering its all-new 2011 Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo models late in the month to dealerships throughout the country. Total Cayenne sales for the month were 496, up 80 percent from the previous year when sales were 275. Porsche will begin selling the V6 Cayenne and its first production hybrid ever later this fall.
Also notable for June were sales of the German automaker’s iconic 911 sports car with sales of 544, up 48 percent over the same period in 2009. Additionally, Porsche’s mid-engine roadster, the Boxster, recorded robust sales of 240, an increase of 75 percent for June. Meanwhile, the Cayman recorded sales of 122 for the month.
For the month of June, Porsche’s Approved Certified Pre-Owned vehicle sales were 585, compared to 561 for the same period last year-to-date. Midway through 2010, Porsche has sold 3,813 CPOs compared to 3,456 the year previously.

With three new vehicle introductions and several other key initiatives planned for 2010, Kia is poised to continue its momentum and build the brand through design innovation, quality, value, safety features and with new technology such as UVO powered by Microsoft®(1), an advanced hands-free in-car communication and entertainment system (expected to be available in select Kia models in the U.S. later this year).

Lightbulb Cadillac

DETROIT – Cadillac reported U.S. sales of 11,788 vehicles in June, a 39 percent increase from the same month last year and the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains. Through the first half of the year, Cadillac sales are up 33 percent compared to the first half of last year.

Cadillac posted strong results in June in key markets across the United States, including retail sales increases of 50 percent or more in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Tampa, Orlando, and Denver.

The SRX mid-size luxury crossover remained in high demand as sales rose 462 percent to 3,804 in June. Redesigned for the 2010 model year, SRX has led its segment in the past year in increases for both sales and projected resale value. June was the fifth best sales month ever for SRX and second best retail sales month ever.

CTS sales rose 31 percent to 4,193, recording its best total sales month of the year and best retail sales month since March 2009. The CTS line, which includes the CTS Sport Sedan and Sport Wagon, will be expanded this summer with the all-new 2011 CTS Coupe.

CTS recently placed in the top 10 vehicles of the 2010 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Survey, which ranks vehicles based on fewest problems in the first 90 days. Sales for Escalade, which ranked first in its category in the J.D. Power and Associates IQS survey, rose 6 percent over June 2009.

Cadillac also recently announced that for owners of all 2011 models it will provide Cadillac Premium Care Maintenance. The new program covers scheduled oil changes, tire rotations, replacement of engine and cabin air filters and multi-point vehicle inspections for the first four years or 50,000 miles.

“Cadillac has been well-positioned with SRX and CTS to win over luxury buyers as they return to the market,” said Kurt McNeil, vice president for Cadillac sales and service. “We expect the trend to continue with the launch of CTS Coupe and addition of Cadillac Premium Care Maintenance. We’re strengthening the line-up with a distinctive new vehicle and elevating the brand by providing owners with a long-term commitment to customer service.”

The CTS Coupe already is attracting attention. Car and Driver has named the CTS to its 10 Best list for the past three years and praised the CTS Coupe in an early review.

”For 2011, the new CTS Coupe joins the sedan and wagon, adding more style and a higher concentration of performance to the CTS’s winning formula,”
Car and Driver wrote in a June review. “The CTS Coupe is one of those cars that love the camera, and it’s no less stunning in the flesh.”

S. sales increase of 35 percent, versus June 2009, the third consecutive year-over-year percentage sales improvement, and double the industry's average percentage increase.

"This 35 percent increase in year-over-year sales shows that we continue to build on our sales momentum,"
said Fred Diaz, President and Chief Executive Officer - Ram Truck Brand and Lead Executive for U.S. Sales. "Consumer buzz is building tremendously with the arrival of our all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee in dealerships now, as well as the continuing accolades for our new Ram Heavy-Duty pickup trucks."

Chrysler Group reported total U.S. sales for June of 92,482 units, an increase of 35 percent versus June 2009 (68,297 units), even in the face of a softer-than-expected June for the industry.

Chrysler Group finished the month with a 60-day supply of inventory (221,726 units), a 14 percent increase versus June 2009 (195,272 units). The 60-day supply is down from a 71-day supply in June 2009. Overall, U.S. industry sales figures for June are projected at an estimated 11.4 SAAR.

"As we enter the busy summer travel season, all four of our brands - Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram Truck - enjoyed sales increases during June," Diaz said. "Our minivan pledge continues to resonate with consumers, as both the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans posted significant year-over-year sales increases."
