Default Report: Toyota Prius "Alpha" MPV (pic released)

When Toyota gets around to expanding its Prius line-up next year, the first model to benefit from the badge will be a compact MPV reportedly badged the Alpha. The small van will apparently be based on a stretched version of the current Prius platform, will add a third row of seats and should be the first production Toyota hybrid with a lithium ion battery pack. Toyota is currently testing a fleet of plug-in Prius hybrids with lithium batteries, but those aren't slated for production until 2012.

The seven-seat Alpha is expected to be about one foot longer than the current Prius hatchback, while a shorter, five-seat version of the Alpha that may look similar to the Hybrid-X concept from 2007 and could retain the nickel-metal hydride batteries of the current Prius to keep costs down. If all goes according to plan, expect the Prius Alpha to launch around March of next year.

Interesting.

I have always wanted Sienna with an available hybrid option. It has the space to accommodate the batteries, and its market doesn't need the speed/power/performance that enthusiasts push for...

It's a shame, because both the Estima and Alphard vans are available as hybrids in other markets. They are VERY competitive in their class, IMO.

The class doesn't really exist in NA though. The Mazda 5 is the closest competitor and those are not priced where the Alphard is. The Alphard is big money. I don't know about the Estima to be honest.

Yes, but it also stands for Multi-Purpose Vehicle which is how it is being used in this case.

Thats Toyota (Corolla) Verso, car I always said that Prius must be very similar to .
New version came out in 2009. It is 5/7 seater copied when Mazda created its original Mazda5 and sister car to the Wish.

It looks like that would make a good replacement to the Matrix.

Some updated pictures:

Including this interior picture:

Also, here is an official sneak peak from Toyota:

I think it's good that it will be similar in length to the Prius, but much better space for 2nd and possibly 3rd rows, not to mention cargo room.

Thanks for the new info. Surely it will be the van with the most MPG.

Great move to me. Van's are a very sensible purchase so offering one with class leading MPG is a great idea.
