With more-or-less comparable vehicle weight/power/aerodynamics/AWD, the most likely answer is the more flexible, 8-speed tranny. You'll notice that the 0-62 time with the Mercedes, with a 7-speed, fits right in between the BMW's 6-speed and Audi's 8-speed, which would make sense.
