are you sure he didnt throw a rod? ive never heard of a clutch *exploading*

Clutches (and flywheels) detonate all the time. That's why manufacturers make and many racing classes require clutch bellhousings to protect the driver and anyone else nearby from flying shrapnel.

So I think the description is accurate. If he threw a rod, being a transverse-mounted I4, I would have expected the hole in the hood to be been further up, closer to the bumper.

I've seen a similar effect, when a battery explodes under the hood of a car, extremely dangerous.
