The exterior is a nice step in the right direction, but after 10 years of the existing model, they needed to do something more dramatic and less evolutionary. They should have scrapped the current design altogether and used the lines of the old beetle as the starting point. No one is going to miss the current design. I can't envision this one selling as well as the previous one (When it launched).
As a former 1.8t beetle owner, I'm well aware of the stereotype, and it was actually a fun challenge modding the car to defy it. It was actually very sporty and well-built compared to its competitors at that price point, and the "girliness" wasn't a factor for me at all.

now that I think of it the last gen beetle was around when I was in grad school 10 years ago. Damn the beetle evolved like the PT cruiser. It was stale to say the least. Then again how do you change such an iconic car and its unique shape

Hopefully this new one is put together better. My sister got a New Beetle when it came out and it was a big POS. Interior parts fell off, starter went out (under 30k miles, but past the 3yr mark, so out of warranty!!), and power window died a couple of times. Pretty pathetic.

Exterior is decent, but what were they thinking with the interior!? The Beetle is an extroverted vehicle, untraditional in every sense, and full of character. So why would they make the dashboard extremely conservative, traditional, and one that could be found in any modern sedan? Very poor move.

I do too. It's the Q5 dash. Doesn't fit in a bubbly car like this. It would be like Mini fitting in the 3-series dash to their cars.
While talking about strikes, there's that boring and unimaginative, rectangular front air intake again. This plain look is ruinning the front end of all VW's.

Yes, that is what VW is currently doing. I should have prefaced the last Beetle had a splashy interior to match the charsmatic exterior. Now we have the same interesting exterior, but with a boring sedan interior.
