So may I ask how the TDI's 30/41 mpg rating is comparable to the Prius' 48/51 mpg rating???
Combined mpg is 34 for the TDI and 50 for the Prius and they think racing the two is proving something?
This is laughable.
Start off with some required reading. The popular mechanics article on the last page should suffice. Point being, the EPA vastly underestimates the TDI's mileage figures, a phenomenon even they have acknowledged.

The entire point is that you can even get a stick with a Jetta TDI, a vehicle that also [happens] to achieve 45mpg. Not some weird CVT, not some slush box, a tired and true manual - or the world class DSG. That's the point of the "burnout". It seemed pretty clear to me.

Um, the Golf [which underpins the Jetta] has been a world benchmark for generations. If you want quite possibly the most integral and successful vehicles in VW's model portfolio, it's the Golf. If you want to talk about "starting trends", how about standard side airbags (1999), or curtain airbags (2002)? Or available turbo powerplants (2000)? Or standard traction control and ESP (2003)? The Jetta has long been at the forefront of it's class for not just passive/active safety systems, but refinement and road manners. Every revision is methodically studied by the competition, from the suspension (copied by GM) to the interior fit and finish, which no small car still seems to be able to topple even today. There's lots of little things that the competition took as well - folding transponder keys were standard back in 2000, Honda/Toyota still cheap out and don't do this (mazda does). Look at those VW-esque roof antennas on the Corolla. That was a trend started on the Golf/Passat in the late 90s.
While the Jetta TDi has been out for awhile, it's powertrain is all-new. To put it in perspective the PM comparison is the latest and most advanced diesel technology vs Toyota's previous generation hybrid.
VW is using Mercedes' BlueTec under license - the biggest difference is the Jetta TDI doesn't need urea, while the Touareg TDI and the GL/ML diesel needs urea.
^^THey are not bringing it over though. I think its great you can choose between a Jetta or Prius, kudos to VW and Toyota. I do wish VW would focus on their product and not TOyota though

Thought I would say I'd wish Toyota would put more effort into making the Prius fun to drive!
