You are trying to tell us BMW just makes cars, dealers don't have tons of BMWs on lots. Reality has yet to hit you but most BMWs sold are from the lot, like everyone else based on its badge, like everyone else. I just happened to look around Atlanta. There are tons of M3's available. 19 2009s here Henry is correct. If you stopped trying to puff your chest about BMW and actually thought of how a dealership is ran, you would easily recognize dealerships WANT to sell whats on the lot. Special orders are hassles for dealers, they take a long time to complete and potential buyers drop out and the dealership is then stuck trying to sell a Orange car with green seats with 15" wheels. BMW does a fantastic job offering custom configuration and even Euro/Spartanburg delivery but to act and propose most M cars and BMWs are sold that way is completely wrong.

The Gwinnett dealer for example has 311 NEW BMWs on the lot? So these are all for dealer test drives and for people just to look at?

That was a long post! haha (too bad I wasnt looking for an 09) - more info is always better.

BMW does keep a whack load of cars in stock. Just yesterday after I'd finished my M3 shopping around in Vancouver & my couple of drives my friend calls me and says "meet me at such&such dealership, there's a 1series there optioned almost the way I want it" (his special order won't make this MY production run). So off we go, dealership takes us to storage ware house & yup, there it is, along with oodles (yes oodles) of other cars this dealership has for general inventory to sell to people like my friend. Guess what, my friend did buy that 135i because it was sitting there. Dealer has car in stock, dealer sells car today. It wasn't exactly what my friend wanted but it was close enough.

OMG you are so right.. I don't know what I was thinking.. Two m3's on avergage per dealership is quite an abundance.. Hey, what do I know.. I mean, you've gone through the buying experience many times over right? Excellent post!!! Godd news for you and a few others.. I will be hanging up the keyboard as this will be my last year on CL! I am sure you will keep me entertained in the meantime..

Good, that is one less person spreading misinformation around trying to puff their bird chest out about BMW.

Sadly not everyone can act like Henry or Dave or CDNRockiers, etc who own both Lexus and German and multiple brands.

I was going through the exact same search until I finally bought my e46 M a couple weeks ago. Have you seen the 2001 phoenix yellow coupe on the island on autotrader.ca? I talked to the owner a good bit on the phone and he seems like a good guy. He's the 2nd owner, and I think I remember him saying it's under CPO warranty for another 2 years. I was close to pulling the trigger on it until I found a leguna seca blue 6spd coupe just north of Nanaimo. I've been into BMWs for a while and it's not my first M car so if you need any help with your search let me know; it's always good to meet a fellow enthusiast.

Oh, and keep in mind if you import a car from the US you have to pay GST, PST, 5.1% duties, A/C excise tax, RIV fees, and then you have to pay BMW $500 for a recall clearance letter. Aaaaand in order for them to give you that letter they need to "program" your DRL's which they charge some $300 for. Then after all that you've got a car that has a substantially lower resale value than a local car.

Good luck!

The Interlagos Blue color is very, very nice. Laguna Seca Blue and Phoenix Yellow are two other highly desirable colors. If you're fortunate enough you'll run into a few Estoril Blue M3's that were made through BMW Individual.

I'm looking at a blue on brown one this week.

It's more than I want to spend but it looks quite good & it's close so I'm wondering, how much is the used performance car market suffering for you guys? (this one is in WA state).

The guy (car is at a dealership) seems motivated to sell too, he's called me 2x since I called to verify that the car was approximately what it was advertised as. Maybe on that point; is it standard practice in the states for salesman to 'follow up' when you haven't even seen the car yet? The first time he called, the first thing out of his mouth was 'I'm following up with you to find out what I can do to make this car yours' ... & I hadn't even seen it yet.

^^^ I think that's pretty typical of someone who wants to sell you a car...

What shade of blue is it? Interlagos and Mystic Blue are very nice colors IMO; Mystic Blue on Saddle Brown would probably look pretty damn good.

I think you either understood wrong or BMW warranties in Canada are different than in the US, or perhaps policies changed. I've never heard of a BMW warranty + extended warranty lasting 10 years. If its a third party aftermarket warranty than I suppose it may be possible.

Ok, little update here.

I went and saw one today (about 3.5 hrs away ... I did so much driving today it's not even funny). Blue on saddle brown, loaded with everything I want (right down to adjustable side bolsters), it's the one I mentioned just up there in post 85.

So the car looks a little more well used than I would think is reasonable for 20k miles. Don't get me wrong, it's in good shape, but not what I call 20k good shape. There are a some nice rock chips in the hood (the kind you only get from going nice and fast) and what looks like was a rub that's been pollished out on the front left corner. Also, the interior, while in good shape, has some scuff marks along the bottoms of the doors and on the dash, and there are a couple specs in the leather.

The car was off a lease in FL and shipped to WA.

I'm worried the car hasn't been well treated thus far; I'm wondering, what can go wrong if the brake in instructions weren't followed?

Right now my trust factor on this particular car is very low.

^^^ You never truly know if any break-in guidelines were followed with ANY used car. Just because it looks like it may have been beaten on doesn't mean it was and just because a car doesn't look like it was beaten doesn't mean it wasn't. Many will even argue that break-in guidelines are irrelevant with today's cars.

One of the worst looking M3s I encountered when I was looking had the cleanest maintenance history of any other I looked at. I mean this guy went and got oil changes at the dealer +/- ~100 miles every 3k miles, all inspection I and II services were performed at the same dealer. However, 3 out of 4 wheels were curbed, weather stripping was cracking/peeling on the passenger side, rock chips, etc., but no service was skipped and it was mechanically sound.

On the other hand I saw many that were in the opposite spectrum - they were clean as hell looking but had little to no dealer service history records.

I will say this though, if you're not confident in what you see then don't buy it otherwise you may always have the little amount of doubt in the back of your mind. I've never regretted for one moment no buying any of the cars I've passed up. If it doesn't feel right, to you, then it probably isn't. At one time I found an '01 Carbon Black that was pretty much everything I wanted an it only had 19.5k miles on it but the bumper was slightly misaligned and likely painted, couples wheels were curbed and had limited service history so I passed on it. Much like the car you looked at, for a 20k mile car it must have been a pretty rough 20k.
