I expected the CTS-V to do better than half a second performance wise since it ran a 7:59 in the nurburgring to the M5's 8:13, but it's still pretty incredible considering it has a WAY nicer interior than the M5 and by initial reports rides quite a bit more comfortably, too.

Most likely the cost of ownership will be quite a bit lower too since it does what it does without a lot of the complicated gizmos.

Thumbs up to GM.

gotta remember some of the performance can be attributed to the driver ... it's not all about the car ... just mostly

i'm super excited for the new cts-v and the eventual ctc-v

I would have guessed the M5 to win here, but considering the CoTY awards, etc. the CTS-V could pull off an upset.

I read on another forum that until this very month BMW refused to offer the CPO program on the current gen (E60) M5s due to their horrible reliability record. Even now it appears they may only be doing it on manuals... not SMGs due to their poor reliability.

The M5 is just far too complicated of a machine... I think between these two cars on the used market (the only way I could reasonably afford either one anyway) the CTS-V would be a much safer choice maintenance-wise.
