Default 2008 AutoPacific Intellichoice Motorist Choice Awards (Lexus LS Top Overall Car)

2008 Motorist Choice Awards

http://www.intellichoice.com/press/2008_motorist_choice

Campbell, CA/Tustin, CA - August 06, 2008 - IntelliChoice.com, the online source for automotive ownership cost and value analysis, and AutoPacific, the industry source for owner satisfaction rankings, today announced the results of their third annual Motorist Choice Awards for model year 2008. With better than expected insurance costs, the Toyota Sequoia scored highest of any vehicle, a position bolstered by its standing as best in ownership costs and best in retained value. Most surprisingly, this year's list of winners does not include vehicles from Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge or MINI Cooper.

There were some relatively new winners garnering top spots including the Nissan Rogue and the Honda Fit, and although the list is fairly diverse among manufacturers, Toyota (10 awards including Lexus), and General Motors (nine awards), thanks to brands such as Cadillac, Chevrolet and Saturn, dominated.

The Motorist Choice Awards were designed by AutoPacific and IntelliChoice.com to recognize the vehicles that delivered both the highest customer satisfaction and the lowest cost of ownership. The awards take AutoPacific's owner satisfaction data from new car and truck buyers and combine those data with IntelliChoice.com's rating methodology to create a new kind of award that speaks to both the hearts and wallets of car buyers.

"Several winners this year are relatively new, such as the Nisan Rogue, Honda Fit, GMC Acadia and Saturn SKY, while others are a surprise, such as the Large Light Duty Pickup and Compact Pickup winners, the Chevy Avalanche and Honda Ridgeline. The surprise is that neither of these are what would be considered 'regular' trucks and therefore show their value to their owners," said James Bell, publisher and editor of IntelliChoice.com. "The absence of Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge vehicles is regrettable and parallels their current sales situation. None of the vehicles from these brands rated particularly well within either AutoPacific's or IntelliChoice.com's individual analysis."

"Due to the economy and fuel costs, more and more people who want a larger vehicle are focusing on Crossover SUVs rather than traditional SUVs or gas-guzzlers. We added two new Crossover segments highlighting this growing class of vehicle," said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific. "In fact, in our Large Crossover SUV segment, every vehicle is an all new release within the last 24 months. The contenders for both new Crossover SUV segments are two of the closest categories."

WINNERS
For this year's awards, Intellichoice.com and AutoPacific identified 27 winners in 26 segments (see below table) and selected winners in four major categories of vehicle. This year's roster added three new segments: Large Crossover SUV, Premium Luxury Crossover SUV, and Premium Mid-Size SUV. These additions highlight the recent growth of the SUV market just as sales of these vehicles are stalling.

* Cars: Lexus LS (Top Overall Winner)
* Trucks: Chevrolet Avalanche
* SUV/Crossover: Toyota Sequoia (Top Overall Winner)
* Minivans: Toyota Sienna

Bell added that any vehicle scoring 700 or higher in the Motorist Choice Awards can be considered in the top tier of highly desirable new cars or trucks. "There were 44 outstanding vehicles scoring 700 or better. Last year, only 25 vehicles scored above that standard, which certainly speaks to the quality of vehicles being produced today. Some vehicles scored very well, but didn't make the winner's list due to other even higher-scoring vehicles in their segment. The Premium Luxury SUV segment is a perfect example, as there are ten vehicles in that segment and nine of them scored 700 or higher. In fact, the Cadillac Escalade topped the Lexus GX by just four points."

Some detailed info here:

http://blog.vehiclevoice.com/2008/08/10-week/

2007 winners here:

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=297525

For the IS, the "Aspirational' title is explained here:

AutoPacific: Call it ‘entry-level luxury’, ‘compact executive’, or ‘aspirational luxury,’ but owners are simply calling it a winner. They rate Lexus’ brand reputation and Lexus dealerships as significant contributors toward the brand’s 2008 Motorist Choice Award® win. With segment-leading overall satisfaction, the Lexus IS scored extremely well with owners in durability, reliability and overall quality. Owners also gave the IS high marks for quality materials, instrumentation, controls and comfy seats.
IntelliChoice: The Lexus IS has the Best in Class ownership costs, best retained value and strong fuel and repair costs.

If it won this against the whole entry level class, that is a huge accomplishment IMO. 3 Series, new C, and CTS are all big competition and yet the IS took home the trophy in this cut-throat segment. Great job!

Not to hog up this thread, but the fact that these rankings come from owners themselves makes them more valuable (IMO) than any of the other ratings or scores given by magazines and publications. These are the people who actually put down money, drive the cars every day, and fork over the cash for service.

With the LS, ES, IS, and RX all garnering top spots...I don't really think that "the sky is falling, Lexus is going under" mentality sticks anymore. Also, the GX was second to the Escalade which is a great showing.

These comments, IMO, are a good insight to how people see their cars. The IS was posted above, but I'll add to them:

LS
AutoPacific: Owners made the Lexus LS the winner of the 2008 Motorist Choice Award® for premium luxury car by providing the LS with top ratings where it counts: Power, braking, handling and being fun to drive. Owners also applauded the ease of getting in and out of the LS, as well as its exterior styling.
IntelliChoice: While the Lexus LS was not the best in either ownership costs or the AutoPacific survey, it took second place in both. The LS has excellent retained value and repair costs.
RX
AutoPacific: Even though the number of competitors in the crossover SUV segment keeps going up, one of the category’s pioneers won the 2008 Motorist Choice Award®. Lexus RX owners claimed victory with high ratings for ingress/egress and reliability. RX also tops the charts in vehicle reputation and overall satisfaction.
IntelliChoice: The Lexus RX was a 2008 BOVY Winner and a 2008 Vehicle Satisfaction Award winner. The Lexus RX has best-in-class retained value and much better than expected insurance costs.
ES
AutoPacific: Owners are more comfortable in the driver’s seat of a Lexus ES than in any other vehicle in the segment. This – in addition to highly rated instrumentation, controls and ride – earned ES a 2008 Motorist Choice Award®. Also adding to the victory were high marks for ride and innovative technology and overall experience.
IntelliChoice: The Lexus ES was a 2008 BOVY Winner, a 2008 Vehicle Satisfaction Award winner, and it has best-in-class ownership costs. In addition, the Lexus ES has the best-in-class retained value, repairs and insurance costs.

Additionally, Toyota owners had a significant bit to say as well, and surprisingly most of their comments centered around impressive quality:

4Runner:
AutoPacific: With high marks for reliability, dependability and overall quality, the Toyota 4Runner takes home the 2008 Motorist Choice Award® in the premium mid-size SUV category. Owners also rated the 4Runner tops in both vehicle and brand reputation.
IntelliChoice: The 4Runner has best-in-class overall ownership costs along with the best retained value and fuel costs.
Highlander
AutoPacific: Scoring the highest in overall quality, the Toyota Highlander takes home a 2008 Motorist Choice Award® in the premium mid-size crossover SUV segment. Owners gave Highlander the highest marks for both vehicle and brand reputation. With additional top scores in reliability and, yes, even cup holders, it was clear that the Toyota Highlander was a winner.
IntelliChoice: The Highlander is a strong performer in every area of ownership costs. It has excellent retained value, fuel costs and insurance costs.
Sienna
AutoPacific: The Toyota Sienna dominated the minivan segment with high ratings across the board and a 2008 Motorist Choice Award®. From high marks for everything from overall quality to safety features, Sienna got a boost from owners with top-of-class scores in ride, handling and power. Owners also were impressed by Sienna’s performance in the all-important minivan trait of interior storage compartments.
IntelliChoice: The Toyota Sienna was a 2008 BOVY Winner and a 2008 Vehicle Satisfaction Award winner, and it has best-in-class ownership costs. In addition, the Sienna has a best-in-class retained value.
Rav4
AutoPacific: The Toyota RAV4 didn’t just collect top marks for exterior size and cargo capacity -- it also received the segment’s highest marks for overall satisfaction. These scores contributed to its Motorist Choice Award® win in the mainstream mid-size crossover SUV segment. RAV4 also received ratings that beat out the competition for traction in all weather conditions, reliability, handling, braking and driver’s-seat visibility. Owners also gave the RAV4 the category’s highest ratings in power and acceleration.
IntelliChoice: The RAV4 is a solid performer in both ownership costs and the AutoPacific survey. The RAV4 has the best-in-class retained value, but it does not perform as well in other areas of ownership costs.
Sequoia
AutoPacific: In typical Toyota-owner fashion, Sequoia owners gave the vehicle high rankings for brand and vehicle reputation. Those rankings, along with high marks for seat comfort, interior storage and interior build materials, helped blow the competition away and secure a 2008 Motorist Choice Award® for the Toyota Sequoia. Guaranteeing the win were high scores for power, braking, handling and “fun to drive” attributes.
IntelliChoice: The Sequoia was among the best in overall ownership costs and has a best-in-class retained value and much better than expected insurance costs.
Corolla

AutoPacific: In a segment that’s growing in popularity, the Corolla takes home the 2008 Motorist Choice Award®. The Corolla pulled past 18 competitors with high marks for both brand and vehicle reputation. Owner’s touted the car’s overall quality; Corolla had the highest ratings in its segment for interior quietness, easy-to-handle controls and driver’s seat visibility.
IntelliChoice: The Corolla has a class-leading retained value and is second in both overall ownership costs and fuel costs.

I think it means either

1. The car that aspires to be a true luxury car, but not quite (aka entry luxury).

or

2. The car for the people who aspires to be like the rich folks that drives luxury cars (lol).
