What should I do....
Hopefully this doesn't get too long....
I have an '03 VW GTI 1.8 Turbo with the automatic. I bought the car new at the beginning of '04. I have had problems with the trans. They swapped it, and it instantly had problems again. They are taking forever to make a decision whether to swap it again or not because they say my car is modded (intake only
). I'm guessing it will get swapped. I want to sell the car and get into something different. Not really because of the trans problem, just because I am young and get bored quick. Haha
So..... I am thinking (hoping) that I could get near $12,000 for it. It is low miles (43k or so), fully loaded, and in great shape. Here is where the problem comes in. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I WANT NOW. I live in Illinois so the car should be able to handle some snow (with snow tires of course). I know it's not best for the paint and such but I meticulously detail my cars. I would like it to get somewhat decent mileage. I don't think asking to see at least 20 mpg on the highway is completely unreasonable. I would like it to be fairly reliable, but I can do a lot of work myself. Maintenance is fine, major problems are not. I want the car to be quick, fast even. I don't car if it's a turbo car that I need to adjust boost on for daily driving or racing (track, street, whatever), or an NA car that I can drive easy for mileage purposes. I am also an avid cyclist. The option to have a bike rack, or at the very least room in the trunk, for a bike or two is a must.
Here is what I have looked at:
SC300:
In the budget and fits most of the criteria. I can see the bikes being a little rough.
IS300:
BARELY in the budget. Newer and more reliable than an SC300?? Would likely be stock where an SC might have work done.
WRX:
Fits most of the criteria quite well I think.
E36 M3:
Roughly in the same boat as an SC300.
Thoughts? Others? Ideas? I also considered a small truck (tacoma?) for daily driving, bike races, camping, etc. and then having another car (older mustang maybe?) that I could start working on to turn into a fun car. Ideally the truck could trailer it if need be. I also thought about a motorcycle as a daily and then having a nicer car to drive or race other times. The problem is that it would still need to be winter worth and bike worthy. All this would really do is save some gas money.
Lend me your infinite wisdom....
Thanks
Dan

One more option....
2 cars.
I could get a cheap Honda Civic hatchback as a daily. It would haul bikes fine and get good mileage. CHEAP
Then... Another car for fun. SC project car, cheaper muscle car (old mustang, something there are a lot of)..... basically something that I could have fun with, build myself, and drive in nice weather.
