Default Feedback wanted on a potential E31 purchase

Guys,

I've been doing a lot of researching, test driving & shopping around for a used "weekend" car. Looking for something fun and out of the ordinary. One car I am seriously considering is the E31 - early 90's 850i/Ci. I don't know what it is exactly, but there is just something about this particular model that I really find appealing. I'd like to get some feedback from anyone here in Car Chat who has had any real experience with this car and what they think of it.

Thanks!

Absolutely beautiful inside and out and an absolute pain to own. The maintenance and electronic problems are pretty bad. I have the owners guide in an old EVO and well, just have tons of money to spend to keep it running.

Once running though, it is a superb car.

Now the 850 Csi is the very complex V-12 version, it wasn't badged an "M" but it was close.

What kind of issues did you have with yours? Why the 840 instead? Is the V8 substantially less troublesome than the V12?

mainly electronic problems. The 850 has 2 of everything. It was basically 2 325 engines matted together. It even has 2 cpus... and etc.. One major problem was a board that controls the tranny went bad.. cost almost $2k to have it replaced. I also had the 750.. which was basically the same as the 850 but did not give me much headaches.. weird.. It ran like a champ though and looks stunning!

The 850 does not have that much power over the 840. I did not personally own the 840, but I heard that it has much less problems than its big bother.
