porsche 944?
ok, just curious, but who here would buy the 944 convertible? we had a 1988 944 until we had to sell it, but just recently, my dad has been looking at porsches agian and wants a weekend car thats a bit cheaper, and when he saw the 944 convertable, he really liked it, they can be picked up for pretty cheap to, bout 16 grand at a dealership near us. any input would be nice
The verts have to be maintained to keep water out of them. Personally I think ANY porsche needs a roof line to look like a porsche, but that's personal taste. The input shaft on the rear end, and a few other querks are all you have to look out for.
BTW you are not looking an a 944, it would be a 944S or S2

I had a highly modded 951 turbo i sold in the cl classifieds a few yrs ago. I knew I'd kill myself in it so it had to go.... I'm getting brave again and have thought of picking another one up.

Had a few N/A 944's also (6 to be specific). This was my most recent.

This was my very first one.

Provided you have deep pockets for upkeep or are mechanically inclined I would take notice of what your getting into.
The 944S2 and 968 are gems of cars but not cheap and certainly not reliable to upkeep. I had a 968cab along with more 944's incl turbos than I care to think about given the money and time expended in them. The 944S2cab can be had for little amount of money but overall condition would be a factor as most have hard leather by now being in the open sun. All will have cracked dashes. I would say 90% leak water in a downpour or car wash (I only get that figure from talking to my fellow Porsche buddies with the same car and personal experience) .
They do look hot to this day and offer decent acceleration-though the 968 is much quicker (yes it is much quicker before some 944S2 fanboy comes on and says it is not) . Don't bother with the auto in either version.
Chips and headers are available for both models as well as a ton of suspension mods.
Problem areas: cam chain pads, timing belts, engine mounts, water pumps. At the age they are at now I would suspect most everything on the car and give it a good inspection.

The 944 has been the 'poor man's Porsche' for longer than the Boxster has even been in existence. It's absolutely infamous for being known as the Porsche that anybody can buy but few can afford to maintain. At least the Boxster's mid engined layout makes it pretty unique
we know of the porsche upkeep issues, they are expensive, but like ive said in other posts, we know people that will fix em for cheap, and i ll tell you, i really love the look of the 944, i actually like it more then the boxster to tell ya the truth, and the 968 is very very tempting, but like ive said, the reason we liked the 944s is because my dads friend is selling one at his used car dealership in town. but i guess we will see, it was just an idea. but to me porsche is a car that you really can't hate. its like the acura legend, once you have it, u need to have it, or one like it, agian
