Default Updated: Ariel Atom 3

The third generation of the no-frills little Ariel Atom has just been released. The Atom 3 is built in China and the U.K. now.

Ariel Atom 3 has more wiggle room and a lower seating position, among other improvements.

Ariel Atom 3 has a new set of Bilstein 10-way adjustable shocks that are sure to be much appreciated by those in the driver seat.

CREWKERNE, England — It's hard to imagine how Simon Saunders, head of tiny Ariel Motor Company, could possibly improve on his popular bare-bones Atom.

But he has. The third-generation Atom 3, just released in the U.K., has numerous visual and mechanical changes, all aimed at making this minimalist pocket rocket go even faster.

The upgraded chassis now offers Bilstein 10-way adjustable shocks. New diagonal side rails result in a more generous added 3.9 inches of elbow room and 2.4 inches of hiproom inside the cockpit. Ariel also has lowered the seating position, which helps improve comfort and lowers the center of gravity.

Exhaust now exits through dual outlets, and a wind deflector is available. Engine choices include normally aspirated and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder units, delivering up to 300 horsepower.

The Atom is built in England and at a new joint venture in Qingdao, China.

What this means to you: Your bottom may now be more securely anchored, but you'll still need to hang on to your hat.

I wish they had a paddle-shift option for people who dislike manual

I think in the US they offer a Honda Civic Si or a GM Ecotec motor - either with a supercharger option.

The Ford motor might be in the UK where Ford is more popular for small car performance motors. Or it might be something that has changed with this new 3rd generation design.

That'd add too much size and weight to an otherwise minimalistic car.
