Toyota/Subaru/Scion Lightweight Sports Car: Toyota GT86, Subaru BRZ, Scion FRS!
#2086
After a fair amount of investigating and Googling, I think I've figured out that the GT 86 / FR-S / BRZ use the Aisin AZ6 manual transmission, the A960E automatic from the current RWD IS 250 and the limited-slip diff from either the 1st-gen IS 300 or its slightly less beefy IS 200 counterpart.
My reasoning is spelled out in this article:

And a huge thanks to Club Lexus member Motohide, whose driving impressions as reported on this thread form an integral part of my article.

As I admitted myself when I linked my article on ft86club, although much of it may be old news to the diehards and the well informed, there are a couple of bits in there that haven't been fully addressed before, as far as I've read.
To be precise, the debate on whether the manual transmission was the Aisin AZ6 (from the IS 200/Altezza, S2000, RX-8 et al) or the AY6 (from the 2nd-gen IS manuals, assorted Toyota trucks, V6 Cadillac CTS and Chevrolet Camaro) wasn't truly settled until the Tokyo Motor Show last December when that sign appeared at the Aisin booth touting the AZ6 as the FR-S/86/BRZ tranny of choice.
As to the automatic, most reports lazily regurgitate the "6-speed automatic derived from the IS F" line (implying some sort of AA60E) when, in fact, it's much more likely that it's the IS 250 RWD's A960E with tweaks similar to those applied to the 4th-gen GS 350's beefier A760E. I haven't seen that referenced elsewhere in that much detail.
Finally, going in, I had no clue whether the Torsen LSDs were "one size fits all" T-2/Type B units or tweaked for each application. In the process, I learned that even the IS 200 and IS 300 LSDs were a bit different, let alone the post-2010 IS F's...
