Toyota/Subaru/Scion Lightweight Sports Car: Toyota GT86, Subaru BRZ, Scion FRS!

Within days of announcing Toyota's formation of a "Committee to create interesting cars," this summer's Best Car Plus magazine reveals that the long-rumoured new AE86 type car has indeed been spawned by the group and should be in showrooms in the winter of 2008. The new article goes into some detail of the new car's spec. Under 4m long and 1.7m wide, it's pretty low at 1.35m tall, and engineers have been directed to keep weight below 1,000kgs. Power will come from a 1.5L 2NZ-FE good for 120 horsepower. What has been unknown until this time is where Toyota would source a cheap RWD drivetrain, but Best Car has learned that it will come from new partner Fuji Heavy Industries - better known to you and me as Subaru. And the best news of all? The committee's final directive is to keep the new car's sticker price below 1.5million Yen. That's about $12,300 USD in today's money. http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/01/r...-more-details/ |
Word is also, Suburu is in on developing it.

So, it's a RWD Yaris?
|
Toyota is so conservative these days... I'll believe it when I see it.
I hope they make it, though. It would really need to have 160 hp for anybody in the USA to care much about it. I'm sure it will be heavier than the original AE86, so a bit more power couldn't hurt. |
Interesting. The price is very nice.. No ideas on a name yet, huh?
|
Ill beleive it when i see it. This has been rumored for many years much like the supra comeback.
|
Like someone else said, seems like a RWD Yaris. Let's see something TC/Celica/Corolla sized with a 170HP 4 cylinder and a ~250HP turbo variant.
120hp...yeah...NO! |
It'll probably weigh like 3000lbs due to all the safety regulations :(

Agreed 100% Also the MR-S was 900 odd kgs, and it had 130hp. 120 is not gonna fly. 150-170hp should be the bare minimum, with space to make a lot more. Their new 2.0Valvematic engine could go nicely there. |

I highly doubt that would be the only engine option, or likely that engine won't be put in there at all.
Rumours did say Subaru was working on a new mdoel for Toyota, so this could be it. Perhaps Toyota and Subaru together are co-developing the RWD drivetrain. Back in the 80's, the Corolla GT-S had up to 160HP (with the supercharged 4AGE). This will definitely need to have minimum 160 - 170HP, even at the targeted weight below 1000kg. |
put little more powerful engine please...
I wouldn't mind pay more for it. |
I'm sure they'll offer more powerful engines as options. I hope.
|
Perhaps this is the 2021 AE86 at the rate Toyota Motor Corp. is going? Put this car on the wish list lol...
|
If those rumored details are accurate it should be fine. You people keep complaining about power but you gotta remember this thing is only gonna cost like 13 thousand bucks! The Celica and MR2 spyder had slightly more powerful engines but they cost more than 10k extra! This thing will be cheaper and lighter than a scion TC which sold like hotcakes and will probably have better straight line speed due to it being A THOUSAND POUNDS LIGHTER.
