If you think 14/18 is great on a pretty small SUV, more power to you.
My relatively cheap V8 Explorer gets better mileage (about 16/20) on regular 87 gas.
I didn't say 14/18 was "great", I merely said I expected a bigger drop. As for comparing to an Explorer, sorry but 16/20 is likely under the "old" EPA system. Let's do apples to apples here. Under 2008 EPA regulations, EPA estimates are 13/19 mpg for a 4.6L V8 4x4 model. Now keep in mind, the GX has a 5 speed auto. The Explorer 4.6L 4x4 has a 6 speed auto. Also, the GX weighs roughly 200lbs more than an Explorer.
So 14/18 vs 13/19; in other words it's a tie. If the GX had a 6 speed, it would have better fuel economy than the Explorer.
The 5.7L Tundra gets better gas mileage then the same 4.7L truck. That’s not just from the window sticker. I have salesman, service writes and techs that have 5.7L and 4.7L and that all say that the 5.7L is better on gas, not great but a little bit better. With the LX570 / Landcruiser getting the 5.7L and a 6 speed transmission it should do better then the previous models.
Yes, I've heard this as well. Even though the 5.7L has a full 1L displacement increase over the 4.7L and a huge power increase over it, it still manages to get better fuel economy due to a better, more efficient engine design.
