Thumbs down UK cops give speeding tickets, take DNA sample

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/03/u...mple/#comments

t seems a little unreasonable and over the top to us. UK drivers pinched for speeding may soon be compelled to surrender a swab, too. If the authorities get their way, it's not just speeders they'll nab to build their DNA database, but even litterbugs will be asked to "donate."

The UK's DNA database has recently come under fire for concerns that the stockpile is overly heavy with children and minorities. Treating everyone like a fugitive shows the government's basic contempt for its citizenry, and collecting reams of biometric data on the population is fraught with the potential for future abuse or invasion. While having DNA on file will likely lead to the solution of some crimes, it seems out of the scope of consequence for speeding. It's one thing if you can opt out, but if it becomes compulsory, we'll remain glad to stay in the Colonies.

Read that this morning. I was pretty shocked. I hope that doesn't happen here in Canada *crosses fingers*

The mandatory DNA stuff out of the UK, plus those robo speeding sensors and other features, seems more police state than responsible law enforcement.

Are they going to in the future consider the 'criminality' genes that are responsible for speeding? In the end we end up with what, desirably docile people? What about privacy of one's own DNA?

I am all for cracking down on speeders but forcing people to surrender DNA swabs just for that seems too Gattaca-esque for me.

Remember that in the UK folks are "subjects" not "citizens". Only in a republic or that fictional society called a democracy are people called citizens. Over the past thirty some-odd years America has become much more of a fascist society so expect stuff like this any time. As a child of the sixties I never expected the shape of the things that came-turns out the boomers weren't against fascist laws and rules after all, just rules made by somebody else.

Yes, the "golden rule" applies- those with the gold, make the rules!
