Kind of off topic, but the Maxima seems to be the forgotten child at Nissan. It used to be their flagship, but now all the attention, development and advertsing is for the Altima. I've always liked the Maxima in SE form. Good bang for the buck.

^^ Absolutely 100% correct. Isn't this common knowledge already?

Let me extend this list even further to clear up any confusion:

Sentra - Corolla - Civic (same class)
Altima - Camry - Accord (same class)
Maxima - Avalon - Acura TL () (same class)

At least Nissan gave a good effort. It shouldn't be a surprise that the Altima handles better than the Camry. In fact, I already saw one up here (in Canada). It's a good alternative to those who like the Camry but think it feels a bit "soft". Also good for those that are loyal to the Nissan brand.

The Aura Hybrid is a pathetic attempt. Honestly, I was expect more from GM (esp. after the Silverado failure). There's only hope that their Two-Mode full hybrid system is a better competitor to Toyota's HSD.

Edit: Did anyone notice that the Camry Hybrid has a front strut tower brace?? I thought only the SE has it.

Surprisingly I've seen quite a few Altima Hybrids already. Pretty good knowing that they arent sold in my state.

That's about twice what I get with my GS
That's a major typo.

Typo?

Hybrids typically get better mileage in the city because the electric motor kicks in during speeds lower than 20 mph...

The Toyota website says 40/38 mpg (city/highway). They seemed to
have beaten the estimates by around 4.5 mpg... It sounds a bit odd, but
even if it is 38 mpg that is still very impressive.

Toyota proved it's got the fuel economy game wrapped up, as the Camry produced the best combined mileage of our test group with 43.2 mpg over both loops — 44.5 mpg in the city and 42.6 mpg on the highway. The Altima's fuel economy in the city actually proved marginally better than the Camry's at 47.3 mpg, but its 38.1 mpg on the highway dropped its combined rating to 40.1 mpg.
corrected version

Edmunds' comparison tests were done in a controlled environment so the results are bound to differ greatly from what the lead-footed editors get from their uncontrolled driving.

You'll be stranded on the side of the road?

German + electric motor = your funeral

Toyota has R&D going on diesel hybrids; I dont think they'd be as awesome as some people think either. Diesels engines make power right where the electric motor makes its power; in the lower part of the powerband. Gas engines make power further down and compliment the power output characteristics of an electric motor much better.

The Li-Ion prius prototype has hit over 100mpg in UK... in US miles thats like 90 something... so this might get really interesting soon.

My '99 Subaru Legacy gets better mileage than that, and it can reach 60 mph in 7.7 seconds.
