I know it seems like a pretty big stretch, but considering how Lexus has become it's own global brand recently, I don't think it would be too far from the realm of reality. As is, the Lexus lineup has undergone massive changes from the days when a lot of the parts were stamped with the Toyota name (Like my second gen) to now having everything stamped with Lexus.

For some reason, I think that if any of the luxury divisions would do it, it would be Lexus. They seem to be running their own shop now that they have become a worldwide brand, rather than a re-badged Toyota.

Anyhow, these are just my crazy thoughts and would like to know other members inputs.

From a corporate tax or business entity structure standpoint it wouldn't make sense for Lexus to separate into a subsidiary (a separate company still owned by Toyota). It would create more work for accounting and taxes. Japanese companies tend to be more efficient and not create tons of companies just to consolidate them. As far as engineering, marketing, R&D yes it would be a great idea for Lexus to be separated from Toyota. As of today Lexus is a division of Toyota which is fine. Now Toyota just has to let Lexus do what they feel needs to get Lexus to the next level. Lexus cars are the best in my opinion and Toyota is a great company and I hope Lexus will be known as the greatest luxury car manufacturer out there...
