If I went into a dealership and they refused my payment I'd walk to their direct competitor and buy whatever they had that I liked on the spot, take a picture, and send the first dealership owner a postcard.

Maybe take this as a sign of things to come from them. Buy from a different dealer. My sister lives in Milwaukee and when I was shopping for her IS250 awd, I found the most lousy and unprofessional sales staff at the Milwaukee dealers. The Chicago dealers were MUCH MUCH more professional and gave me deals that just embarasses Lexus of Glendale and Northshore Lexus. In fact, McGrath even offered to deliver the car to her in Wisconsin, or send someone to go pick her up and drive her back down to Chicago so that the delivery specialist could go over the car with her.

PS- I found the best deal at Bredemann Lexus. Salesperson was a gentleman named Abed.

Total BS. Real Time Check Verification has been available for more than a decade now to help merchants separate good check writers from bad ones. In my case, I paid my down with a check with no problems. They inserted the check in a system for sufficient funds verification and took 30 seconds doing so. Nowadays everything is verify.

Isn't a check and cash the same thing to the dealer? Even if I wrote a check, the cash is stil sitting in my checking account. Or are you saying you actually pay the dealer with a stack of $100 bills? The most actual cash I paid a dealer was $12K for a used car. In that case I had a stack of $100. But for a car that cost over $30K? That is a lot of $100 bills

I knew that this was bull when they said that to me...shoot, I could smell it as they spoke.

I am just going to take my business elsewhere like planned. Any good places in Illinois? I saw someone mentioned Bredemann.

I'm not understanding what you mean by a 'check from Capital One for auto financing'. Is that somehow tied to a credit card? Is it a check associated with a checking account you have with them that somehow is only good for auto financing? Why is it limited to that purpose?

Sounds like there's some info I'm not seeing here that means this check is somehow different from a regular check on a bank checking (or money market) account.

This check is basically the same thing as a loan, but the financial institution will send you a blank check that is able to be used up to the dollar amount that you request. When I fill out the check, the institution will then take out my monthly statement once a month from my bank account.

agreed. must have been some other kind of check? (or not really a check at all?)

Paying for a car in it's entirety with a stack of $100 bills is something I would want to observe in person Especially if it's a $100K Lexus.

Who really would want/need to do that ? Probably with money from illegitimate sources (maybe drug dealers) ?

I've bought every new car I've ever owned with a personal check, including my brand-new IS300 in 2001. I have never financed a car, though, of course, I've sat in on plenty of finance deals with people I was shopping with (not everyone can afford to pay cash for a new car, of course). But as far as I'm concerned, for my own car........no check, no deal....and I've never been turned down.

actually dealerships they do NOT like to see you bring in a suitcase of cash, that's really a lot of trouble for them (from counting to authenticating to security), they much prefer check.

now in this incident, i am not sure if the check technically is different from any of the normal checking account checks, but of all the purchase i have done so far, check is just fine

I bought my last car from Toyota I forgot to bring my check that day.. The saleman ran my credit and let me take the car home and he told me I can come back within 7 days to pay for the car. I never had time to bring them check I ended up going back and pay for it 10days after I took the car. The cashier there didn't say anything about being late and had no problem taking a check without verfied any info. It only took about 2 min to pay for the car..

That blows: I'm glad you walked. I think many times the dealers think that you're so desperate and excited to get the car you'll cave and just do it their way. I'm sure it happens all the time.

I always recommend that people negotiate price before talking about financing. The dealership knows that if your credit score isn't perfect they've got you by the short hairs and they can 'control' you if you really want to get into a particular car. You definitely have more options with a good credit score; in my case I shopped loans before even starting to negotiate on a car. My credit union was great and the rate was fantastic; this gave me the advantage once I found the right car... I was ready to "pull the trigger," but I wasn't desperate to get the car.

New life motto: "Always be prepared to walk away from a schmuck."
