Let us talk about the 1993 Porsche Boxster Concept
I found it then to be perfect and what, nearly 15 years later, to be perfect.
The Porsche Boxster first appeared as a concept vehicle at the 1995 (actually 1993 buddy) auto show in Detroit, where is stole the show. At the time, Porsche was desperately ill, having seen costs skyrocket and demand fall. The Boxster – and the 911 that followed – would usher in a new era at Porsche. While the Boxster concept previewed some of the styling themes the new cars would share, it was much leaner, more muscular, and stylish than the production car that would follow. However, with a base price of approximately $35,000, the 1997 Boxster didn’t need good looks to help it off the shelf. Porsche couldn’t keep enough of them in stock as people who never before could afford a Porsche found the dream within reach.
More than 120,000 Boxsters have been delivered to customers to date, a figure that – on an annualized basis – is well ahead of Porsche’s plans to move up to 15,000 of the two-seaters each year. Only now demand is starting to cool, and the timing couldn’t be worse. The world economy is bouncing in and out of recession, and Porsche’s biggest gamble yet – the Cayenne SUV – will arrive in February 2003. In response, the company has given the Boxster a mild facelift, a little more horsepower, and a glass window for the convertible top.
