Porsche working on a Porsche-Golf for 2012 ?

Posted on: May 9th, 2007

As weird as this may sound, it seems Porsche is working on a Porsche badged Volkswagen Golf for 2012. Now, we know that the Volkswagen Golf is a huge success, but a Porsche version of the car seems like a totally absurd idea; unless of course Porsche is postioning itself to become more mainstream and compete with BMW.

The picture above is on the cover of the new AutoBild magazine. The caption next to it read (in German) ”kompakte geheim-projekte bis 2012. der porsche-golf.” That translates to “compact secret projects until 2012. the Porsche-Golf.”

Last week, Porsche officially submitted an offer to acquire shares of Volkswagen, which will give it total control of Germany’s largest auto maker. If the bid goes through, it’s obvious Porsche and Volkswagen will share even a larger number of their platforms, but a Porsche-Golf will definitely take away the factor that sets Porsche apart from other German luxury auto makers.

it would cheapen the brand. Buyers in this market also are looking at exclusivity in addition to performance and luxury. It won't happen.

But it does look good....

I think that would be the wrong thing for them to do.
They shouldn't "cheapen" the Porsche brand.

What is all this talk about "cheapening the brand"? Talk about snobish lol.. This Porshe (if made)would be in the same price as say the Lexus IS250... Does that car "cheapen the brand as well? Just another Porshe for driving purists to choose from...

but people who spend six figures on a vehicle tend to be very snobbish and brand conscious. They would not want to associate their porsche with a rebadged golf, and would spend the money on a ferrari, AM, etc.

i'm not saying I would do the same thing but, I know others will.

To me, the Cayenne is a rebaged Tourage... they share too many similar structure. SO why not a Rebadged Golf?

If you have money for a Ferrari, chances are you won't be getting a Porsche anyway.

A Golf based Porsche is a terrible idea though, I think whoever is in charge of Porsche/VW/Audi/Lambo etc. has lost their minds

Audi's R8 competes with the 911 and to a certain extent the Gallardo. Audi's TT competes with the Boxster, and there was that rumor of another Audi that would compete with the TT!

On a side note, why not make a 911 front-end and sell it ala carte? If they are going to slap it on the Golf, why not others?

I think it is a great idea! Want to give your Pontiac Aztec that sporty look that men envy and women are attracted to? Buy our custom-made 911 front-end!

Perhaps some of you forgot about another Golf based vehicle that is selling like hotcakes... The Audi A3

This Porshe offering reminds me of the 924/944 series of the 80's
