I don't get it, was this because of Toyota adjusting for the number of sales days vs AP looking at the raw numbers?

Toyota joins GM, Ford in reporting poor sales in April

DETROIT (AP) — April was such a lousy auto sales month that even Toyota Motor (TM) reported a decrease from the same month last year.
General Motors (GM) and Ford Motor (F) also reported decreases, and DaimlerChrysler (DCX) had a small increase, but the negative Toyota numbers are counter to a long trend of rising sales, sometimes in double digits.

Toyota sales, which include the Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands, dropped 4.4% to 210,457, the company said Tuesday.

The Japanese automaker has seen double-digit increases in recent months and it seemed like the rising sales would never end. In March, for example, the company's sales jumped 11.7%.

GM sales in April were down 9.5%. Ford U.S. sales 12.9% below the same month last year due largely to slumping car sales. DaimlerChrysler sales were up 1.2%.

GM sold 307,554 light vehicles in April, down from 339,796.

Ford sold 227,619 light vehicles last month, down from 261,381. Car sales were off 23.6%, while truck sales were down 5.7%, the company said.

DaimlerChrysler's overall sales increased to 213,999 from 211,365, because of an increase at its Chrysler Group. Chrysler sales rose 1.6% to 193,104. Mercedes sales were down 1.8% to 20,895.

Chrysler said it had a strong retail month, with the Jeep brand up 29%, largely because of sales of the Wrangler and Compass models.

At Ford, even the company's Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan midsize cars, which had been selling well in previous months, saw a decline, with Fusion sales off 2.5% and Milan sales down 5.4%.

Ford's F-series pickups, traditionally the top-selling vehicles in the U.S., were down 12.4% for the month.

"With April behind us, we remain focused on getting the word out about the strength of our new products, and our marketing offensive is moving into high gear," Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas, said in a statement.

Nearly 60% of Ford's car decline was due to cancellation of the Taurus sedan, which ceased production late last year. The company sold 14,668 Tauruses in April 2006, mostly to fleet buyers. The company plans to rename its Five Hundred sedan the Taurus for the 2008 model year.

Ford pointed to the success of its new products, namely the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossover vehicles, and the Ford Expedition large sport-utility vehicle, as signs that it is selling vehicles people want.

Expedition sales were up 27% for the month, while Ford sold 9,134 new Edges and 2,901 MKXs in April.

All major automakers were to release their April sales figures Tuesday, and industry analysts expect a poor month. Most analysts are predicting that U.S. sales overall will be down due largely to the slumping housing market, rising consumer debt and no pent-up demand for vehicles.

Gasoline prices also are at or near $3 per gallon, and many consumers were expected to delay auto purchases until they find out what will happen to gas prices during the upcoming summer driving season.

The Associated Press reports unadjusted figures, calculating the percentage change in the total number of vehicles sold in one month compared with the same month a year earlier. Some automakers report percentages adjusted for sales days, which last month was 24 and in April 2006 was 26.

As always, for proper comparison sales figures have to be adjusted according to the number of selling days, in which case Toyota's April sales was up without a doubt.

FOR RELEASE: 2007-05-01

GM Reports 311,687 April Deliveries

Retail Sales Up 3.6 Percent On An Adjusted Basis, With 15 Models Showing Retail Sales Increases; Daily Rental Sales Drop 36 Percent
Retail Sales of Full-Size Pickups Up 6 Percent On An Adjusted Basis, Led By The New Silverado and Sierra
Chevrolet Impala, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura Contribute To 15 Percent Retail Sales Increase On An Adjusted Basis For Mid-Car Segment; Aveo Drives Economy Car Segment Retail Sales Up 27 Percent On An Adjusted Basis
GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook Fuel Significant Retail Increase In Mid-Utility Crossover Sales

DETROIT - GM dealers in the United States delivered 311,687 vehicles in April, a reduction of 2.2 percent on a sales-day-adjusted basis. GM's April retail sales of 228,465 were up 3.6 percent, on a sales-day-adjusted basis. There were two fewer selling days in April this year.

Fifteen different models showed a retail sales increase, reflecting the continuing strength of GM's new product portfolio. So far this year, daily rental sales of 13 percent of total sales accounted for the lowest percentage of total sales in five years. Daily rental sales were down 23,178 vehicles in April, or 36 percent on a sales-day-adjusted basis, compared with a year ago as mix and quality of share continued to improve significantly. Consistent with its turnaround strategy, GM has reduced daily rental sales by more than 83,000 vehicles in the first four months of 2007.

"April sales were consistent with the pattern of the last few quarters - retail sales up, daily rental down, and continued strength of our launch vehicles," said Mark LaNeve, vice president, GM North American Sales, Service and Marketing. "We are particularly pleased with the Silverado and Sierra pickups, and from January to March this year we've seen more than a four point full-size pickup market share increase at the expense of Toyota, Ford and DCX. Pickup truck customers are telling us in today's environment they are shopping for value, fuel economy and warranty. GM wins on all three."

Chevrolet Aveo, Impala, Silverado, Suburban, and Avalanche; Pontiac G6; Saturn Sky and VUE; GMC Sierra, Yukon XL and Canyon; Cadillac CTS, SRX, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT all had April retail sales increases compared with a year ago on a sales-day-adjusted basis. Pontiac G5, Saturn Aura and Outlook and the GMC Acadia are newly-offered products and continue to contribute retail sales momentum. The GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook had retail sales of more than 9,100 vehicles, pushing a significant retail increase in GM's mid-crossover segment. GM's total sales of more than 11,000 vehicles in this segment pushed monthly performance up 184 percent, on a sales-day-adjusted basis, compared with the same month last year.

Total sales of Saturn vehicles were up 29 percent, GMC was up 17 percent and Cadillac was up 2 percent in April on a sales-day-adjusted basis.

"As we continue to execute our North American marketing plans, we've seen positive results, including increased residual values for our products. For customers, this means better resale values for their GM car or truck," LaNeve added. "With new products such as the Buick Enclave, Cadillac CTS and Chevrolet Malibu still to come this year, we expect to build on this customer enthusiasm."

Certified Used Vehicles

April 2007 sales for all certified GM brands, including GM Certified Used Vehicles, Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, Saturn Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, Saab Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, and HUMMER Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles, were 41,622 units, down 11 percent from last April. Total year-to-date certified GM sales are 181,473 units, up 3 percent from the same period last year.

GM Certified Used Vehicles, the industry's top-selling manufacturer-certified used brand, posted 36,625 sales, down nearly 10 percent from last April. Year-to-date sales for GM Certified Used Vehicles are 159,409 units, up 4 percent from the same period in 2006.

Cadillac Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles posted April sales of 2,800 units, down 22 percent from last April. Saturn Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles sold 1,478 units in April, down 17 percent. Saab Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles sold 639 units, down 10 percent from last April, and HUMMER Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles sold 80 units, down 30 percent.

"GM Certified Used Vehicles, the industry's top-selling certified brand, continues to set the pace for the category, with sales through April up more than 4 percent," said LaNeve. "April sales were impacted by having two less sales days than last year. Certified GM sales year-to-date are up over 3 percent from the same period last year."

GM North America Reports April Production, 2007 Second-Quarter Production Forecast is Revised at 1.145 Million Vehicles

In April, GM North America produced 335,000 vehicles (120,000 cars and 215,000 trucks). This is down 17,000 units or 5 percent compared to April 2006 when the region produced 352,000 vehicles (130,000 cars and 222,000 trucks). (Production totals include joint venture production of 15,000 vehicles in April 2007 and 24,000 vehicles in April 2006.)

Additionally, the region's 2007 second-quarter production forecast is revised at 1.145 million vehicles (403,000 cars and 742,000 trucks), down 15,000 units or 1.3 percent from last month's guidance.

I would still have more respect for the Toyota numbers if they at least mentioned the fact that the raw numbers showed a decline. At least AP did mention the selling days issue. With the way car dealerships work, I have never really been a fan of this selling days number massaging.

previous top sales month of 235, set in July of 2005 - a point in time
where Maserati jumped over 90% in volume. Year-to-date Maserati sales are
up 14% over 2006, which was another record year for Maserati.
As anticipated, the new Quattroporte Automatic has appealed to those
looking for the ultimate sedan amongst its competitors. The DuoSelect

sport sedan on the planet. Sales remain strong with the DuoSelect
commanding over 50% of Quattroporte sales.

two high-profile locations in the Southern California market, where it
derives 35% percent of sales. Maserati currently benefits from 49 dealers
across North America. In 2007 the expansion of the dealer network will
continue with a target of 55 retail points strategically located in key
markets. Maserati North America is proud to have the top selling dealer in
the world, The Collection in Coral Gables, Florida. The southeast is the
second leading region for Maserati in the U.S. followed by the New York
Tri-State area.

Interesting that some automakers report a straight monthly % change while others report % change by daily sell rate.

Ford for example reports April 07 sales of 228,623 compared to 262,722 in April 06. The change is a -13.0% but if Ford reported it as % change DSR, 228,623/24 = 9,526. 262,722/26 selling days = 10,105. That is only a -5.7% change.

Nissan is reporting April 07 sales of 71,124 compared to 86,720 in April 06. That's a -11.1% DSR change. But if they reported it as a straight monthly % change like Ford did, that would be a -18.0% change.

Ford performed poorly with a 13% drop or 5.7% DSR drop. But Nissan with an 18% drop or 11.1% DSR drop performed even worse. I didn't realize Nissan was slipping so fast.

I guess Ford marketing should have reported change in %DSR like most others as that would not look as bad as the straight monthly % change. Look at Toyota, they sold less in a month but still report it as an increase based on change %DSR.

I don't think it's number massaging at all. Comparing April 2006 to April 2007 is only meaningful on the basis of selling rate.

It's like saying I run faster than you because I can run 100 meters in 12 seconds when it takes you 13 seconds to run 120 meters. Does it make any sense?

Only the speed, or rate, is a comparable measurement.

That makes sense, but why doesn't all the manufacturers report it in that fashion then?

Not really as far as car sales are concerned. All that I am saying is I didn't notice any of the car dealerships that I regularly drive buy not being open for six days, or twenty percent of April 2007. I guess they were all closed by you for an average of 1.5 days a week in April. According to AP, Toyota sales in straight numbers showed a sales decline of 4% in April, I don't think Toyota has anything to be worried about with a sales decline, with their size, it is inevitable.

Toyota has always been reporting like this, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse, depending on the number of selling days of this year versus one of the last year. This month just happens to have fewer selling days.

Look, "April" is something very artificial when buyers can buy cars on any selling day, with some selling days simply happening to fall on the border of a month. Only the "rate" at which a car maker is selling their vehicles is a good way to measure if sales increased or declined.

Anyway, look at the data any way you like. The fewer number of selling days of the April this year only means a larger volume increase (in terms of sheer number, not rate) of the April next year.
