Default New EPA Mileage Ratings for All Lexus

From kiplinger.com are the old and new EPA gas mileage ratings for Lexus cars. The EPA is trying to get more realistic. A quick glance at the numbers will show that all Lexus models are about the same (16-22 city and 23-29 highway, which is not much variation among models):

Mfr. Model Engine 2007 2007 2008 2008
Size(L) City Hwy City Hwy
Lexus IS250 2.5 24 32 21 29
Lexus IS250A 2.5 22 28 19 26
Lexus IS350 3.5 21 28 18 26
Lexus GS350 3.5 21 29 18 27
Lexus GS350A 3.5 20 27 18 25
Lexus GS430 4.3 18 25 16 23
Lexus GS450H 3.5 25 28 22 26

Pfft- I still get under 19mpg. their city is still over optimistic. It would be safer to say 16-29mpg. I like how they list the city as 21 (middle of the city) yet 29mpg (highest for hwy).

My '07 gs350 states 21mpg city and 29 highway. I have yet to hit above 20mpg. People say I drive too short of a distance. Under 10miles and thats considered city. Which is fine, but I get on average 16-18mpg. So I say its being over-optimistic. Granted, most dont have issue. Most get 25-27mpg.

I was grumbling that they list the "average" for City milage, yet they llist the best for Highway.
The poster said (16-22 city and 23-29 highway)

which looks like a mistake to me, as if they reversed the city and highway

I've never had trouble achieving highway EPA MPG - city is a different story. Always has been.

My experience has been that I tend to get close to the city rating. If one assumes that and assumes 12,000 miles per year at $3 per gallon, then difference between the most and least gas effecient Lexus is just $600 a year. Which all means that the mileage figures are fairly unimportant on cars whose prices range from about $40,000 to $80,000, not including tip and tax.

I tend to just use EPA mileage as a very ballpark indicator of mileage. I think here at CL, we tend to drive more aggressively as a whole than the EPA raters. I'm sure there's many Lexuses out there outside of our group that have never had a needle swing past 3500 rpms. I honestly don't think my dad has ever driven over 2500rpm around town in his ES unless its an emergency merge/pass situation.

And if you can get close to the highway rating, the difference ($300) between the best andthe worst Lexus gas guzzling is even less based on the 2008 EPA ratings.

Not backwards. That's the electric model. It tends to get better City driving as it uses the electric more.

"Mfr. Model Engine 2007 2007 2008 2008
Size(L) City Hwy City Hwy
Lexus RX400H 31 27 26 24 "

Oh and while $600 in a years worth of gas doesn't sound much, thats my tint and HID fog light money right there. So for me, that is something. And before you tell me something dumb like "Then don't buy a 300hp car" That's not the point.

Those ratings are incorrect. That Kiplinger website merely provides estimates of what the 2008 EPA ratings will be, not what the actual EPA ratings are going to be.

fueleconomy.gov has new ratings
MB E350 17/24
LS460 17/25

though the MB doors sound better, and the overall quality and workmanship is superior.
