NAPLES, Fla. — The first Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead coupe bound for the U.S. market has been snapped up at a charity auction here for $2 million, making it one of the most expensive new cars ever sold in America. The car, which has a base price of $407,000, was purchased by an unnamed resident of Naples at the annual Naples Winter Wine Festival.
The food-and-wine event is rapidly becoming a destination for serious car collectors. A one-of-a-kind 2007 Maserati Quattroporte Automatic, the first delivered in the United States, earlier netted $790,000 in an auction at the festival.
The Phantom Drophead coupe is equipped with a 6.7-liter V12 engine that makes 453 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Rolls-Royce says it goes from zero to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds.
Organizers of the festival say more than $1.6 million from the purchase price of the car will go to the Naples Children and Education Foundation. The winner of the auction is expected to take delivery of the car in the summer.
What this means to you: Buy the second Phantom Drophead coupe instead, and use the extra $1.5 million to add a few more ponies to your stable.
