As for being 'notoriously unreliable', maybe you missed it but her car only has 13K mi. on it - I just don't see it falling apart quickly. She typically only drives to the mall, a local restaurant, grocery store, etc.
And if she buys it she still has a year bumper to bumper warranty left and if anything does come up and the car seems to be troublesome, it can still be sold quickly enough.

OK...Thanks, that clears things up a little bit. Looks like you got a pretty good handle on the situation. If she becomes too elderly to drive it before three years is up, she can always put it up for sale...and the money from it, of course, may be needed for her care. l
And......a suggestion.....with only 13K miles on it in 3 years, make sure it is driven enough to keep the oil clean and the battery charged. Both deteriorate quickly with non-use.
