Volvo, Ford developing dual-clutch gearbox

Swedish automaker Volvo is developing a twin-clutch gearbox to compete with offerings from Volkswagen, company officials reportedly told WhatCar? magazine. The technology will also be shared with parent company Ford, according to the report.

The transmission will be similar to the Direct Shift Gearbox from VW, which uses two computer-controlled clutches to offer extremely quick shifts. The technology is generally regarded as superior to an SMG-style automated manual with just one clutch, because shifts are much smoother during casual driving.

Twin-clutch transmissions are also comparable to regular manual transmissions in terms of fuel economy. BMW is said to be developing a dual-clutch gearbox to replace its SMG system, and Porsche is working on one to replace its Tiptronic automatic system. Chrysler is also rumored to have a DSG rival under development.

So that makes, BMW, Porsche, Chrysler, Honda, Ford, and Volvo all coming out with their version of the dual clutch gearbox (and for damn good reason) in the near future. Very interesting.

The Volvo/Ford team seems to be creating some cutting edge technology.
(I rarely see anyone with a Volvo in their signatures, any idea why? I am thinking of getting an S40?)

Volvo has some nice technology be nice if Toyota/Lexus take some of the ideas, especially like the heart beat sensor in the S80, so you dont have a person hiding in the back of ur LS460.

Why not have a Triple-Clutch gearbox? Hope Lexus pushes that idea.
