The places may have disclaimers, but if they left all the windows down with the doors unlocked then that's gross negligence. No disclaimer can cover that.

I agree with that, disclaimer, even if posted, should only apply when there's no negligence on the valet's part.

That's why I only valet with rented vehicles when I'm visiting another city. Locally, there are not too many places that require valet. For those that do, I prefer to park further away & walk.

The disclaimers aren't enough to prevent winnable lawsuits. They're just there to try to discourage people who don't know any better from filing in the first place. "Well gee, the sign did say they can kill my family and I can't sue them. I guess I'll just move on then."

same here. and this might be a good reason to have a beater that you drive around where you need valet

After dinner (about 2 hours) came out and gave the guy my ticket, paid the valet fee and left him his tip. Got into the car and drove away and noticed my girlfriends window was down so I asked her "Did you roll the window down just now?!" She replied with a "No, why?!". So I got to a stop light about 2 blocks down and started to look for my phone (which I decided to leave so no one would bother me during dinner with her). Noticed it was missing?! Then I looked in the back seat for my briefcase GONE my day planner GONE my new Nextel Blackberry Box (2 days old by the way ) my 3 coats I just bought earlier that day from Nordstroms that was hanging in the coat hanger behind my seat GONE

I immediatly pulled over and checked the trunk thinking the guy for whatever reason threw my stuff in the trunk, NOTHING! At that point I was pissed and annoyed. So I bolted back to the Valet, pulled up and asked the guy where the hell my stuff was?!!?

He replied
"It was all in the car when I parked it dood"
Me: "Well obviosuly it's not in the car anymore, so where could it be?!"
My girlfriend "When I first entered the car my window was down?! Did you roll it up before you left the car?!"
Valet guy: "I believe so?!?!"
Me "Well when I left the car with you ALL the windows were up bro?!"

So his manager just came back from I guess a break and I expalined everything, this guy had the nerve to suggest that I might of threw everything out to get new stuff

I replied
"I eat here every Friday, infact I have a Executive Pass to this resutraunt bud and have been eating here for the past 2 years! Don't get me wrong, but I have no reason to throw my own stuff out which holds alot of valuable clientel information in means to get it replaced for free by you?! I have no problem buying it new with my own money!"

At that point the Valet manager went inside and got the Westgate Hotel Manager.

After all that the guy that valeted my car explained how busy it was when I droppped off my car (which it was) when he was going to park my car (which they own a lot 2 blocks down is where they park the cars I just learned then) he rolled my windows down. He parked the car, hit the window switches and hit the lock button and ran back to the Valet area to park more cars. I guess he didn't hit the passenger front switch hard enough and it didn't roll up IDIOT By the way this resutraunt is loacted downtown San Diego (so it's got its ups and downs every other block with alot of bums). The police officer said some bum problably got into the car and took everything, luck me it wasn't a car thief or I could of lost my screens and sound system, DVDs CDS etc etc.

In the end I'm getting a new Blackberry (again!) and new briefcase and coats. But all...ALL that client information is lost. There is sensitive information in some files but not to the extent of SSN#'s and such. After 3 hours of explaining and police reports etc etc and going through reciepts providing proof and serial numbers the hotel is going to replace my items and charge it to the valet guy that parked my car Kinda sucks but hey its called R E S P O N S I B I L I T Y

Be careful people with these valet people, what a night *sigh*
Ugh, I could have warned you about downtown San Diego valet. I valeted my Lexus right after I got it at Auburgene and I got it back with windows down and my CD stolen right out of the changer. If its Ace Parking that was doing the valet I'm sorry. A guy I used to work with had a girlfriend who was the Ace parking manager and they fired to two clowns that worked there.

NEVER EVER valet a car you care about.

I also knew a guy in college that worked at Mr. A's retaurant doing valet, he was eventually fired for stealing some money from them. He told me all sorts of cars he got to abuse, he was usually stoned or buzzed too.

My mother used to be a court reporter and told me those disclaimers mean absolutley nothing in court. She told me about a case she worked where someone checked their fur coat at a coat check, came back and it was gone. The company tried to get out of it, woman sued and won. So keep that in mind if someone tries to point to "their policy", tell them you will see them in court.

Wow San Diego has some really messed up valets. Funny thing is, I'm a valet(already said) and I only valet my car if I know the guy doing it. I drive my Lexus all the time so I really don't freak out when I get a nice car, but some people do. I love my job, I have driven every type of car, even a F40 and some Lambos, its crazy that I get paid to drive there Lambo, lol. But I would really watch who you give your keys to, I mean stay outside and watch him/her drive your car until you can't see them any more. Only advice I have.

Was any of the info password protected and did the police get fingerprints to try and catch the person im just hoping the info is not enough to cause any ID theft.

Update: Got a call today from a detective. He asked me a bunch of questions and we went over what exactly was in in my briefcase. I was on the phone for about 3 hours, he took all my info (or double checked it?!) and said he would be in contact with me.

The hotel left a voice mail for me at my office earlier explaning when I could expect payment for my missing property. I haven't called them back yet but I think before I hit the office I'll just stop by.

________

They did fingerprint the car that night. From what I noticed they did the passenger door area (exterior) and most of the front passenger area. The rear seating area especially the door panels. My briefcases have codes and synchronized key locks so they would have to really break into it, I hope if possible they cover that. The information in there is sensitive but not enough to cause ID theft. This is just a big mess! Ugh...

Thats it for now left some details out. Just don't want to think of it much right now so I can get through my day today.

So Cal, any update on whether you got everything replaced and if they found the goons who stole your stuff?

I had my car valeted at a ritzy restaurant in OC recently and I watched the valet guys driving the cars away. Some of them drove the cars pretty fast and to a certain degree, even reckless. When I got my car back, I noticed that they had put it into "S" mode rather than the normal automatic mode that I normally use. I'm wondering if they were having a bit of fun w/my car while I was eating?
