Default Crack the Code: AMG offers an even higher performance package

Mercedes-Benz AMG buyers represent a small group of automotive enthusiasts. An even smaller subset are those who have made the leap to hyperspace—those who check “option code 030” on their AMG order form.

030 is the not-so-secret code for the performance package for 2006 SL55, CLS55 and SLK55 AMG models. The packages include goodies like carbon fiber interior trim pieces, Alcantara-trimmed AMG sport steering wheels, monster brake systems, AMG locking differentials, and special two-piece alloy wheels shod with high-speed-rated tires. The SLK55 package includes a Nürburgring-calibrated AMG sport suspension, while the SL55 kit adds Active Body Control tuned at the famed German high-speed test track.

Top speeds (with the obligatory footnote warning “obey speed laws”) are 186 mph for the SL55 and CLS55 (a 20 percent jump over standard AMG versions), while the kitted SLK55’s top track speed is a mere 176 mph.

So far some 20 percent of SL55 buyers are ordering 030 kits, while 9 percent of CLS55 and 7 percent of SLK55 purchasers are opting for the upgrade, says Robert Allan, AMG product manager for Mercedes-Benz USA. That’s about 800 or so kits sold, even though the package price tags range from $6,900 to $14,000.

Allan says code 030 performance packages for 2007 AMGs will be available as soon as those models go on sale this summer.

This really doesn't seem worth the price and one could get the same kind of non-AMG stuff for much less, but I guess if you love AMG, you love AMG.

I only like the wheels & don't care for the rest, the bumper of the upgraded package is kinda ugly actually, the regular AMG SL55 looks almost perfect as it is, the SL65 rims is the only thing I would add.

I love the 65 and this package bumper. Looks really great to me. Wish it was offered on more models.

Would like ot see how much of a difference this makes around the track compared to a regular AMG model.
