Default Best Radar Detector and your thoughts on VEIL

1) Anyone have a recommendation for a recent radar detector over $200 that's not a V1?
I'm currently looking at the Escort 8500 x50, the Bel RX65 and Bel Sti Driver.
Most of the posts are from 2004 or 2005. Since tech is changing all the time,
does anyone have updated info?

E.g. The Bel Sti Driver is supposedly an awesome radar detector detector buster
and a great radar detector to boot. Any thoughts?

2) Also anyone have opinions about VEIL, anti-laser application?
http://www.laserveil.com/

Sorry for the noob question. Did a search, couldn't find specifics.
If anyone can point me to appropriate previous posts, it would be much appreciated.
OT, but I didn't know where this kind of post would go.

Note a lot of these will still have V1 info in them, but should have discussion on other models too.

Thanks. I wish there more posts on more recent detectors, RDD jammers, and laser countermeasures...

been satisfied with my Escort 8500, had it for several years saved me many times, only time I got a ticket with it was when the cop had a laser, cant do much about that. There are newer more updated versions of the 8500. V1 and 8500 are the top radars

Just wondering, do you have something against the V1?

Not exactly. It's just not what I'm looking for.

From my very basic research from reviews and tests I found on the internet, it seems that the V1 is the best when it comes to laser detection. The problem is, by the time you get shot with the laser, your V1 is more of a "ticket notifier" than an avoidance product. It's radar detection is perhaps a bit oversensitive and has earned it the nickname "the chicken little of radar detectors" but not as strong at greater distances.

Which is why I asked if anyone has any experience with VIEL:
http://www.speedzones.com/counter.html
Speedzones talks about its effectivity with certain types of cars and I thought that it would work well on the IS too since I have a black 250 w/o the front plate.

on the V1s I see little utility in the directional arrows, either way when I detect radar im going to slow down and drive more cautiously, I find the direction to be irrelevant

that's too bad that someone has derailed your basic "research" and basically filled your head with apparent lies. I challenge anyone to prove to me that V1 with laser detection is a "ticket notifier." I don't care about any magazine articles, circumstantial evidence, or all that other drama about laser usage and stats, etc., all I care about is physics, facts, and real life circumstances. I have hardcore concrete proof that the V1 can detect and successfully prevent you from being ticketed when you are targeted by stationary police laser. I've done it. Several times. Way more often that I've been caught (which is twice). If you're going to believe the "idiots" who don't own a V1 and then turn around and tell you it's useless because you can't completely avoid a laser ticket at all times with it, you might as well believe the rest of the uninformed general population that claims a basic radar detector doesn't work either (citing radar instant-on capabilities).

When properly used, the V1 is not oversensitive. I have turned OFF the X-band capability because after several years of use, I have concluded that no X-band radar is deployed in the metro area or in this immediate region. It doesn't false like you think it does, it's really not that bad. When in the proper mode, the V1 will perform as designed, which is to make the driver aware when it detects traffic radar and laser. Do I wish the V1 would false less? Yes. Did I wish all the other garbage radar detecotrs false less that I used to own? Yes. It's not a perfect world and some places are worse than others. V1 doesn't deserve the title "chicken little" because when it alerts, I know whether to slow down and start searching for cops or simply mute the radar and keep driving. BTW, nobody drives all over creation so much that every day they have to deal with a new false alarm. V1 is the best on the market and people who attack simply don't own one or can't afford one...I hate to say it. I've had Solos and Escorts and Passports all my life so I'm not guessing when I say those detectors don't compare. My 2 cents.

Having owned a V1 for almost a decade with an upgrade about 5 years ago, I tend to disagree with the V1 being a "ticket notifier" when it comes to laser/lidar. I usually catch the "spray" of laser at least once a month up and down the I-5 and I-405 corridor from the Washington State Patrol. And the target is usually in front of me.

At 1,000 feet, the laser beam leaks at least several feet in diameter.

While the "spray" of X, K and Ka band radar is much wider and bounces a lot more, laser still has similar dispersion properties.

My V1 has worked perfectly also in the K and Ka-bands. (I turned off X band on the V1 since it's not used here.) Sure, other radar detectors might have better sensitivity to radar-bands, but once you get use to the arrows, there's no going back. The sensitivity in the V1 is plenty for my tastes and gives me plenty of reaction time.

Good luck on whatever detector you choose. Whichever detector you choose, remember that it's only half of the job. You need to be alert and drive defensively if you're going to speed and avoid tickets. Radar/Lidar detector is NOT a license to drive wrecklessly.

Cheers,
Kermee

By the way lets mention the guy that runs radartest.com has an apparant axe to grind with Valentine, stating more than once how Mike Valetine has an ego etc..personal slander which kind of kills your credibility, especially if you are a "supposed" radar testing site. I only go by personal experience and like ken and kermee said I've had them all and nothing compares to a V1.

My V1 has saved me multiple times already since I got it back in November. I have nothing to compare it to since it's my first radar detector but I can definitely say that it works well.
