Had the V12 version and put in 80K before the accident. Only had 3 problems that were electrical related - Emergency light, brake linning message and trunk lid message would come on for no reason.

The design is still nice even for today.

HAHAHAH... good luck to that person trying to sell his/her for $55K.

well, as a BMW tech, i would love to have one.............. if i had the time and money for parts and repairs.

not that there are a whole lot of problems with them, just hard to diagnose ones that end up costing lots of money to repair.

bottom line, they are one of the most beautiful cars, and the interior gives you a very "in control" feeling. as for the one for $55k, it was probalby an 850CSI 6speed... last i looked, there were two on ebay... both over $50k. considering that was the closest they ever came to an M version, i say its worth it. you get a lot of car with the 8.

I always loved the 8 series but had enough sense to stay away from its electrical problems..............oh that's right I bought a MK II Range Rover.

ask anyone who ownes one or has in the past... most of the nagging problems are very intermittant... that means leaving your car at the dealer for a long time for them to attempt to recreate it and maybe find the cause... only to find out that a new radio runs $2,000

its just a very expensive car to keep up... now if you are lucky, you may never have any of the little problems, but that goes with any high end car.

Nice thread. These are one of my favorite Bimmers. I actually just seen a 850CSI last weekend in all black. But it looked horrible. Nasty chrome Dubs and the body had dings and scratches all over. And very old tint that was turning blue. But the rims were shining.

Did you guys know there was a company that took them brand new and retrofitted a twin turbo kit? There are something like 10 in america and they are 850 hp

Whoever said the 840 was the one to get was right. The v12's always were problematic and not much faster than the 8 cylinders were.

They are gaining in value at this current point in time. My father is actually looking to score one for himself if it is nice enough and within his price range

I've always had this new-engines-in-old-cars fetish. I LOVE the 8 series; my dad's friend had one when I was like 10 and when I saw it I just fell in love. Couldn't get it out of my mind. It was an 850 and he told me it was broken in his house lol. But... can you imagine a new BMW V10 engine swap into an old-school 8series? :]
