The official McLaren thread (20th anniversary)
How... is the term "worlds fastest road car" determined?
Is it determined by whatever car has the highest top speed? For some reason I can see a lot of cars both exotic very limited production, and purpose built heavily modified but streetable cars being a lot faster, at least a lot faster accelarating.
Still beautiful machines though.

9ff did it too with their modified 911 and Kosenegg (however u spell it) but they just went after that 1 aspect.
Gordan Murray stated when they built the F1, they built it to be THE best overall sports car every built in EVERY respect, handling, driver feel, low weight, and simplicity.
Notice they got the record in 1998, 3 years AFTER the car debuted. They honestly didn't know and one day went to find out.
Even today, cars breaking 200mph are rare. It takes superb aerodynamics and TONS of power to push a car through the wind at that speed.

I wonder if we'll ever see another car again sometime in the near future like the McLaren F1. As others have pointed out, it was built and designed to excel in EVERY aspect. It was blazing fast, handled very well, was pretty driveable daily for a super-exotic, every little detail was thought out and designed meticulously. The engine bay was coated in 24k gold i believe. And all of this in the early 90's.... hats off to McLaren.
Too bad Mercedes and McLaren dissolved their production car relationship. I would've liked them to use a monstrous AMG motor and build a new F1 road car!

Mike, I thought I knew the McLaren pretty well. But your info and those pics blew me away. I didn’t know there were so many variants.
Thanks for the post on this 10+ year old supercar, I learned a lot.

The last new F1 was just sold last year.
They never made the production goal of 300 though. From the top of my head they only produced around 100 cars. Thats including the race cars (some of them have been converted to road cars again).

Sold it with a big premium too.
Yeah, the production ended some time ago.
